Being Faithful to Your Spouse is More than S*xhttps://drcarolministries.com/how-being-faithful-to-your-spouse-is-more-th...

Being Faithful to Your Spouse is More than S*x

https://drcarolministries.com/how-being-faithful-to-your-spouse-is-more-than-s*x/

You rightfully expect your spouse to be faithful to your marriage vows and you probably hold yourself to the same standard. “Don’t have s*x with anyone who’s not your spouse.” But that doesn’t adequately express the concept of faithfulness. What does it mean to truly be faithful to your spouse?

The Hebrew concept of faithfulness carries the idea of being dependable, trustworthy, reliable. We count on God to be faithful (Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 89:1, Lamentations 3:23). God expected His people to worship only Him, and when they worshiped other things God described them as engaging in adultery and treachery (Psalm 78:56-57, Jeremiah 3:20, Hosea 6:7).

God designed marriage as an earthy demonstration of the intimate relationship He has within Himself in the Trinity and that He desires to have with us. Our earthly marriages need to mirror the kind of covenant love God displays toward us.

Certainly that includes not having s*x with anyone who’s not your spouse. But is that all? Being faithful to your spouse means a whole lot more.

More Than Bodies

Seeing faithfulness in marriage as only the acts you do with your ge****ls misses the point. There are plenty of husbands and wives who have never “crossed the flesh barrier” but who have been anything but faithful. Jesus made this clear when He equated looking at another person “with lustful intent” with adultery (Matthew 5:27-28).

Yes, any kind of s*xual contact with someone not your spouse is wrong. But what about the rest of it? When you promised to “forsake all others and keep myself only unto you” that included getting your s*xual satisfaction only from your spouse. How have you dealt with the temptations to:

• Fantasize about having s*x with someone else
• Get s*xual gratification from p**n
• Demand s*x from your spouse as an entitlement
• Withhold s*x as a weapon to manipulate or punish
• Flirt with someone who’s not your spouse
• Share emotional intimacy with someone else that should be reserved for your spouse.

There’s a difference between appreciating another person’s physical characteristics and lusting. When your mind starts going down the road of, “What would it be like to see them without their clothes on?”, you’re being unfaithful.

And there’s a difference between sharing emotionally important things with a same-s*x friend or small group in order to get support, insight, and help, and sharing things with someone that you wouldn’t want your spouse to know about. You absolutely need friends beyond your spouse, but do you find yourself strategizing to be sure your spouse doesn’t find out? That’s dangerous. (If your marriage is toxic, seeking appropriate outside perspective and help is NOT being unfaithful.

The human heart easily seeks to justify itself. If you find yourself uncomfortable reading these paragraphs or you hear yourself making silent excuses, that’s an indication the Holy Spirit is wanting to deal with you about something.

More Than S*xuality

S*xual exclusivity is critical for a marriage to be healthy, but faithfulness involves more than s*x. Remember the concept includes being trustworthy, reliable, dependable.

Can your spouse count on you to be for your relationship? Have you broken trust with your spouse in how you’ve spent money? Are you spending more time and energy at work or with your friends while neglecting to invest in your marriage? Can your spouse depend on you to truly hear them, to be a safe place for them to be real, and to partner together in solving difficult problems?

Faithful means sticking with it through tough times. Life happens. You and your spouse both bring baggage into the relationship. You will each hurt each other. Faithfulness means you don’t give up when things become uncomfortable. You do the required work to deal with your own stuff because that’s what’s good for the relationship. You stick with your spouse as they work through their stuff.

And you invest in intimacy regardless. If vaginal pain or erectile difficulties make normal in*******se impossible you do the work necessary to find other ways to connect physically and emotionally and pleasure each other. You do the work necessary to identify and overcome the barriers to intimacy. You seek to understand each other’s hearts with deep knowing.

(Note: some marriages become toxic. There are times God releasees someone from such a destructive relationship.)
HELP! There’s no Faithfulness Here!

Who of us can measure up to that standard of faithfulness? The disciples felt overwhelmed at Jesus’ teaching about marriage and exclaimed, if that’s the case “it is better not to marry” (Matthew 19:10).

We can’t be faithful–to God or to our spouses–on our own. Faithfulness is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). It’s part of becoming like Jesus. And the only way we can become faithful is to stick very close to Jesus, drawing our life from Him.

A few practical words.

If you feel convicted that you have been less than faithful to your spouse, start doing something different today. Simply trying harder won’t work. Faithfulness cannot depend on your own willpower. What will you start doing differently to become the person God is calling you to be from the inside out?

That might be dealing with your own s*xual past, p**nography use, hating s*x, or other baggage. (Our S*xpectations site offers some resources in learning how to do that.) It might mean learning skills of communication. You may need to work with God in making and keeping your own heart open to connection with your spouse.

And if you feel the pain of your spouse being unfaithful to you, remember that you can’t change them. You can only choose who you want to be. Criticizing or blaming your spouse won’t work. But there are many times setting hard boundaries or confronting bad behavior may be the kindest way you can be for your relationship.

Above all, stay on your knees. Remember, how God treats us, His faithfulness to us, is determined by who He is, not by how we behave. Ask God to show you who He needs you to be to your spouse in this season.

Let God’s faithfulness to you encourage and strengthen you. “If we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself” (2 Timothy 2:13).

Your Turn:
• How well have you been faithful to your spouse?
• Have you thought of faithfulness more broadly than just who you have s*x with?
• Where do you need to grow in faithfulness?
• Being faithful to your spouse is more than not having s*x with anyone else. It also involves matters of the heart, mirroring God’s faithfulness to us.

Being faithful to your spouse is more than not having s*x with anyone else. It involves matters of the heart, mirroring God’s faithfulness.

Finishing Your Marriage Without Regrets
- https://drcarolministries.com/finishing-your-marriage-without-regrets/

Marriage is for our benefit here on earth. Marriage can sometimes seem endless and tedious, but it is temporary. And when it’s over you will want to be able to look back without regrets.

Every now and then you see a story or video about a couple who was married for many decades and died in their 90s within minutes or hours of each other. Most of us, me included, will not be blessed with that experience. In most marriages one spouse will precede the other in death by years or even decades.

In looking back at the years I was married, I’m grateful for the ways in which I loved my husband well. I also remember how hard it was on occasion to remember the “long view” during periods of fatigue, sickness, or confusion. There are certainly things I wish I had done differently, though my regrets are few.
When your husband or wife dies it’s too late to love them well. Here are a few things I would encourage any married person to embrace, knowing you will want to look back at your marriage without regrets.

1. Say what needs to be said.

Hard conversations are hard! It’s so much easier to let things slide. It takes courage to broach the difficult topics. That includes talking about things such as:
• What’s important to you about death, and final arrangements
• Financial matters
• Your and your spouse’s eternal standing with God
• Things you need to ask forgiveness for, or forgive your spouse for
• What you love and appreciate about each other

These are not topics to get past in a one-and-done conversation; they are things to prayerfully and tenderly talk about at the right times. Choose the setting thoughtfully, study your spouse to know how they will be most able to hear you, and be courageous in bringing up the painful or difficult topics. Do an awful lot of listening.

There will come a time when you will wish you had said what right now seems too difficult to say. I’m so very grateful for the hard conversations Al and I did have. There are more things I wish I would have said, but now I hold on to everything we DID say to each other. Don’t put these conversations off because they are hard. Hard and uncomfortable is better than too late!

2. Deal with your stuff.

You can only love your spouse well to the degree you have dealt with your own junk – habits, false messages, addictions, trauma, selfishness, etc. None of us are perfect! But becoming functional means your stuff is not in charge; you are.

If you’ve been through trauma in the past (and almost every one of us has been), intentionally seek healing so that your scars don’t continue to wound your spouse. Do whatever it takes to deal with your addiction so your spouse is not victimized also. If p**nography, anger, food addiction, people pleasing, or anything else is an issue for you, get serious and get help if you need to. While you must do this for you, perhaps realizing how it will benefit your husband or wife will give added fuel to your motivation.

The Holy Spirit will continue to work on you as long as you live. But getting past your dysfunctions will dramatically impact how well you can love your spouse. Do it now; that may be one of the best gifts you can give your husband or wife.

3. Love your spouse well.

That does not always mean being nice! It does mean being the person God needs you to be to your spouse in this season. As you get over your own stuff you can do this better and better.
Be intentional. Take the time to pay attention. Study your spouse; who are they really? How are you showing up in your marriage? What’s it like to be married to you? If your spouse suddenly was not there, would you be able to look back at the way you have been loving them and not have regrets?

Remember that both you and your spouse are sinners; those are the only humans available for marriage! In a healthy marriage God intends for both partners to find significant healing; are you being a vehicle of that healing for your spouse?

And say I LOVE YOU often! In both words and deeds. Don’t make the mistake of thinking your words are enough if you sabotage or demean your spouse in other ways. And don’t believe your spouse knows how you love them by your actions alone; they needs words as well. Love languages differ; it helps to know your individual love languages.

As the six-year-old little girl said, “If you love someone, hurry up and show it!”

Love your spouse well while you can; you will want to finish your marriage without regrets or at least as few of them as possible.

Your Turn:

Are you on the way to finishing your marriage without regrets?
If your spouse were suddenly not there, what kind of regrets would you be left with?
Few? Many?
Is there anything you would like to change now?

The key to finishing your marriage without regrets is to love your spouse now such that you will look back knowing you loved them well.
