❄️ SPRING? SUTHERLAND HAS OTHER IDEAS!
With temperatures hovering just above freezing and the possibility of wintry weather in the region, today is one of those days that reminds us why Sutherland is such a fascinating destination.
September is normally the beginning of spring here — yet it is also historically the last month in which Sutherland regularly records snowfall.
So if you are visiting today, pack the coat, gloves, beanie and camera.
And don't think cloudy weather means there's nothing to do.
🪐 Sutherland Planetarium is almost tailor-made for a day like this. Its indoor full-dome astronomy shows run throughout the day, including the “Rising Star” presentation featuring SALT and the SKA.
✨ Sterland Stargazing remains one of Sutherland's well-known night-sky experiences, with sessions offered almost every night of the year. Tonight's cloud may interfere with observing, so confirm conditions beforehand — and Sterland's own advice is particularly appropriate today: dress warmly!
🔭 The South African Astronomical Observatory Sutherland is another essential stop. Its research telescopes stand on the hilltop about 1,800 metres above sea level, one of the reasons the observatory is so exposed to Sutherland's dramatic weather.
And when it's this cold, there's an excellent argument for not driving home.
🏡 Jack of the Karoo is a recommended accommodation option in Sutherland.

Find somewhere warm for a Karoo meal, explore the town, watch the clouds move across the Roggeveld and keep an eye out for that first snowflake.
0°C tonight. Karoo weather. A warm bed. And perhaps a little snow. ❄️❤️
Jack of the Karoo is a beautiful Victorian house with a big old willow tree that will sweep you of your feet. Book direct here for best value.
