WILL YOU ELECT EAGLE 1, ECL AGAIN?
Edgar Lungu is Zambia's sixth republican president who was first elected into office in 2015. It's a short term which the Constitutional Court ruled did not constitute a full term. As a result, he was allowed to contest elections in 2021. It was his third contest which he lost, having contested in 2016 for the second time.
Lungu is soft spoken. A lawyer who is down to earth and is said to have no problem with associating with common people despite having a high profile status. Such was his nature even when he was republican president. Those close to him say while you may take away many things from Lungu, his humbleness and Christian faith remains intact.
When he was President of Zambia, Lungu was condemned as running a very corrupt administration. Caderism became pandemic. He was seen as a weak President who allowed thugs to brutalize the people in public areas such as markets, bus stations etc. However, 3 years now after he lost elections to the current President Hakainde Hichilema, Lungu is beginning to gain political popularity when comparisons are made between the current and previous administration.
Pro-Lungu supporters says the cost of living was bearable under their leader. The further argue that when Lungu was President, mealie-meal was costing K110 per 25kgs bag whereas now, the same is cost over K400 in some areas. The argument is extended to the fuel pump price. When Lungu was President, fuel was costing around K19 per liter. At the moment, it's fetching around K36 per liter. There was minimal loadshedding during ECL's time when the current was experiencing effects of climate change. Lungu was denounced as a drunkard and visionless person who used climate change as a lame excuse for loadshedding. Yet, current the country is experiencing the worst loadshedding where in some areas, electricity is gone for 5 straight days and the leadership says it's due to climate change.
The comparisons seem to be making Lungu popular again. People are beginning to see a savior in him. While this is so, his critics argue that the sixth president remains visionless and should not given another chance to rule Zambia. No matter the criticism, the Alebwelelapo rhythm seem to be growing everyday.
At the moment, ECL has again been taken to court over his eligibility to run for office again. This is despite the courts already pronouncing itself in this case. However, his fate remain unknown, to participate in the 2026 elections. Edgar Lungu's party PF is currently split into three. He leads one faction and it's not clear how he will get out of this.

OUR PRESIDENT MUST BE TRUTHFUL IN HIS SUBMISSIONS...
When he was in opposition, the president claimed that lack of electricity was a sign of failed leadership. Now that he is in power, he's telling citizens to stop complaining and view power outages as an opportunity,an opportunity to what?
*Does the President realize that most Zambians cannot afford to purchase solar kits?
*Is the President aware that small businesses relying on electricity have shut down due to load shedding?
*Does the President know that water scarcity in compounds has forced people to drink dirty water, risking diarrhea diseases?
*Is the President aware that unscrupulous businessmen have hiked prices of solar kit products?
I urge the President to visit these compounds, conduct a visibility study, and witness firsthand the suffering of our people, especially in this harsh economy. It seems the President lives in imaginary Zambia is not the Zambia some of us stay in,he needs to come back to reality.
It's an insult and unreasonable to suggest that the poor, who survive on less than K50 a day, should embrace load shedding and buy solar kits costing over K15,000. This is a clear disconnect from the reality of the majority Zambians,
.
I remain,
Thomas Sipalo Komboni president
