RED CROSS, ZCS EYE POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP TO SAVE LIVES

The Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) and the Zambia Red Cross Society are moving to join forces in first aid training and other medical areas, in a partnership set to strengthen emergency response across the country.

The push came when a delegation from the Red Cross Zambia paid a courtesy call on the Office of the Deputy Commissioner General.

Receiving the delegation, Deputy Commissioner General Mr. Bwalya Kuyomba said there are many areas where the two institutions can work together, and called for joint efforts in first aid training and other medical fields.

“It is imperative that we work hand in hand with the Red Cross. There are so many areas where our two institutions can collaborate, and first aid training and other medical areas are where we must start,” said the Deputy Commissioner General.
He further called for the training of inmates in first aid, saying it would equip them with life-saving skills.

“It is imperative that we train not only our officers but also inmates in first aid. A trained inmate can save a life inside the correctional facility today and in the community tomorrow. This is rehabilitation in action,” he said.

Speaking at the same event, Red Cross Secretary General Mr. Cosmas Sakala called for a strong partnership between the two institutions. He noted that the Red Cross could make use of the two ZCS training institutions in Kabwe and Kaoma to expand its training programmes across the country.

Mr. Sakala added that the expansion could include training ZCS officers in first aid, equipping them with life-saving skills.

The visit marks a significant step toward a lasting partnership between ZCS and the Red Cross, bringing together two institutions committed to service, humanity and the protection of life itself.

Ubumi Prisons Initiative Steps Up Mental Health Support for ZCS

Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General Fredrick S.S. Chilukutu has commended the Ubumi Prisons Initiative for its commitment to supporting correctional officers facing mental health challenges.

Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner General, Zambia Correctional Service Director for Extension Services, Deputy Commissioner Auxilia Kadingi Chishimba, said the Service appreciated the organisation’s efforts to provide mental health support to officers.

Mrs Chishimba was speaking during a meeting with representatives of Ubumi Prisons Initiative at the Zambia Correctional Service Headquarters in Lusaka.

Ubumi Country Coordinator Lena Kresojevic said the organisation was concerned about the mental health challenges affecting correctional officers and their families and was committed to providing support.

Ms Kresojevic said Ubumi had observed that some correctional officers were experiencing serious mental health challenges, with some cases reportedly resulting in su***de.

She said the organisation wanted to work closely with the Zambia Correctional Service to help prevent further loss of lives and strengthen mental health support within the Service.

“We are going to focus on officers because they are going through a lot of issues. Officers are dying due to su***de, and we want to prevent this,” Ms Kresojevic said.

She said Ubumi intended to hold a meeting with correctional officers and their families at the Bothwell Imakando Correctional Staff Training College in Kabwe, where various health services would also be provided.

Ms Kresojevic said the initiative would also focus on training officers as peer educators so that they could provide basic support and help colleagues experiencing mental health difficulties.

She said Ubumi had secured funding to work with the Zambia Correctional Service on its mental health policy and to build the capacity of officers in addressing mental health concerns.

The initiative comes as the world prepares to commemorate World Mental Health Day on October 10.

Ms Kresojevic said Ubumi also planned to use the occasion to raise awareness and strengthen support for correctional officers and their families.

She said the overall goal was to identify practical ways of helping officers cope with mental health challenges and ensuring that those in need received appropriate support.
