ZNS GRADUATES SKILLED YOUTHS AS GOVERNMENT COMMITS TO MORE

The government says the reintroduced National Service Training Programme under the Zambia National Service (ZNS) has proved to transform youths through skills training and discipline aimed at promoting national development.

Speaking during the graduation of over 1,000 youths in Kabwe earlier today, Defence Minister Honourable Ambrose Lufuma reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to empowering young people through the Voluntary National Service Training Programme.

Mr. Lufuma described the initiative as a key driver in promoting discipline, patriotism, entrepreneurship and economic empowerment among youths. He said the programme reflects the Government’s commitment under President Hakainde Hichilema's leadership to equip young people with practical and life-sustaining skills that will enable them to become job creators rather than job seekers.

He added that graduates had been equipped with technical, entrepreneurial and basic military training aimed at producing disciplined and productive citizens capable of contributing to national development.

Mr. Lufuma further said the Government would continue expanding training centres, improving infrastructure and increasing support towards the programme due to growing demand from youths across the country. He urged the graduates to use the knowledge and skills acquired to become agents of change in their communities.

Meanwhile, Zambia National Service Commander Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi said the programme had equipped youths with practical and marketable skills in food production, bricklaying, auto mechanics, carpentry, agriculture, plumbing and metal fabrication.
Lieutenant General Solochi said the initiative had also instilled military discipline, patriotism and entrepreneurship among the graduates, describing it as a key driver of socio-economic transformation.

He noted that training centres in the Copperbelt Province, Muchinga Province and Northern Province had successfully trained both male and female youths under the programme.

He further commended the Government for reintroducing the initiative, saying it was helping youths become disciplined, self-reliant and productive citizens.

Speaking at the same event, Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe, who represented Central Province Minister Mwabashike Nkulukusa, thanked the Zambia National Service for successfully hosting the training and the graduation ceremony.

Dr. Mwanakampwe said the Government remains committed to empowering youths through skills training and increased development funding.

He noted that the increase in the Constituency Development Fund from K 1.6 million to over K 40 million per constituency had created more opportunities for youths across the country.

He urged the graduates to use the skills acquired to support infrastructure development, job creation and contribute to national development in their respective constituencies.

President Hakainde Hichilema has officially reintroduced the Zambia National Service (ZNS) voluntary skills training program, which had been inactive since the early 1980s. The initiative was approved by Cabinet in December 2024 and commenced its first training cohort in September 2025.

The six-month program focuses on basic military training, agriculture, and vocational skills such as plumbing, carpentry, and entrepreneurship.

Due to the success of the first intake, a second cohort is scheduled to begin this year 2026, following the graduation of the first group today may 8, 2026.

GOVT RUSHES TO RESCUE FIVE FEARED BURIED IN MUMBWA MINE COLLAPSE

Government has launched an emergency rescue operation after five people are suspected to have been buried following a mine tunnel collapse in Mumbwa Central Province Permanent Secretary Dr. Milner Mwanakampwe has confirmed.

Speaking during a press briefing, Dr. Mwanakampwe said the incident occurred after unauthorized individuals accessed the mine through channels not known to the police officers who had been deployed by the mine owner to guard the site.

"The mine collapsed and five people are suspected to still be buried underground. Our priority now is to save the lives of those trapped before we look at what precipitated the illegal entry and other things will be dealt with later," Dr. Mwanakampwe said.

He emphasized that government had already taken remedial and corrective measures, but illegal access remained a challenge.

Dr. Mwanakampwe said a committee of Permanent Secretaries was immediately instituted to oversee the rescue efforts: "on 6 May, the Directorate of Mines Safety, Inspections and Audits, together with a specialized rescue team, was dispatched to the site, excavation works commenced this morning."

He disclosed that: "So far, one tunnel has been opened but no survivors have been found. As of 16:00 hours today, teams are working to open a second tunnel in a bid to reach the trapped individuals."

Dr. Mwanakampwe said President Hakainde Hichilema has directed that all possible measures be taken to save lives before any investigations into the cause of the collapse are conducted.

“We are doing everything we can. Mine Safety officials, District and Provincial Administration, and security personnel are all on the ground to ensure we rescue our citizens,” Dr. Mwanakampwe said.

While the victims are believed to be Zambian citizens, the Permanent Secretary noted that there is also a likelihood that some of those trapped may be foreign nationals.

Rescue operations are ongoing and government is monitoring the situation on the ground.
