Preserving Documentary Heritage for Future Generations

The Memory of the World Committee is meeting at the Livingstone Museum to advance its mandate of identifying, safeguarding and promoting documentary heritage under the UNESCO Memory of the World Programme.

The committee plays a vital role in ensuring that invaluable documentary heritage including national archives, manuscripts, photographs, maps and audiovisual records is preserved and made accessible for present and future generations. These records serve as a collective memory of our societies, documenting significant historical events, cultural traditions, scientific achievements, and the experiences of communities over time.

As a custodian of Zambia's heritage, the Livingstone Museum is honoured to host this important gathering, which reaffirms the commitment of heritage institutions to protecting documentary resources that enrich knowledge, strengthen identity, and promote a deeper understanding of our shared past.

Preserving documentary heritage is preserving the memory of a nation.

World Bee Day

Did you know that 20th May is celebrated as World Bee Day? We honour these tiny yet hardworking creatures that play a vital role in sustaining life on earth. Bees are essential pollinators, helping plants grow, supporting biodiversity and contributing greatly to food security and healthy ecosystems.

At the Livingstone Museum, our Entomology Section is dedicated to the research, study and curation of insects, helping to preserve knowledge about these fascinating and important species for present and future generations.

As we celebrate World Bee Day, let us appreciate the importance of protecting bees and their natural habitats because a world with bees is a world with life.

After celebrating International Museum Day, we gather as one museum family, united by our shared heritage and common purpose. The celebrations may come to an end, but the spirit of unity, inclusiveness and cultural appreciation continues to live among us.

There is strength in diversity, and we proudly embrace our different expertise, perspectives and experiences as a powerful source of unity and resilience. When people from different backgrounds come together, we create stronger communities built on understanding, respect and cooperation.

This collective strength is what enables us to preserve, protect and care for our heritage for present and future generations.
