PRESS STATEMENT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

KABWE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL URGES TRADERS TO DESIST FROM STREET VENDING AND RETURN TO DESIGNATED MARKETS

Kabwe Municipal Council wishes to advise all traders currently vending along streets, pavements and undesignated areas to immediately cease the practice and return to the designated trading spaces within the official markets.

It has been observed with concern that an increasing number of traders are operating outside the gazetted markets, causing obstruction of pedestrian walkways, traffic congestion, poor sanitation, and increased risk to public health and safety.

This trend undermines efforts to maintain order, cleanliness, and a conducive business environment for all.

The Local Authority states as follows:
1. All designated markets remain open and ready for use and sufficient trading space has been provided in all the markets with improved facilities including water, sanitation, and waste management services.
2. Street vending is illegal under the Local Government Act as read together with Statutory Instrument No. 12 of 2018 (Street vending and Nuisances) Regulations. All vendors to retain to the markets and deployment of Council Police Officers and Removal of all illegal temporal structures out, without further notice, may be considered if vendors resist.
3. Trader safety and dignity is our priority as we want all traders operate in a secure environment with access to customers,6 security, and proper waste disposal.
4. Market management teams have been directed to assist traders with space allocation and onboarding to ensure a smooth transition.

The Council acknowledges the economic challenges faced by traders and remains committed to supporting small-scale businesses. However, this must be done within a framework that protects public order, health, and the interests of all residents.

We therefore urge all affected traders to comply with this directive in the spirit of cooperation and for the good of Kabwe Town.
Members of the public are also encouraged to support traders operating within the markets.

KABWE FIRE BRIGADE RAISES ALARM OVER BUSH FIRES

Kabwe Fire Brigade has issued a strong public appeal to residents to stop the indiscriminate burning of bushes, particularly those carried out in search of mice, following a recent bush fire incident in the area.

Recently firefighters were called to a bush fire that broke out behind the ZESCO Civil Engineering Sub Station, adjacent to Mulungushi Textiles. The brigade responded swiftly and successfully extinguished the flames before they could cause significant damage.

Kabwe Fire Brigade has expressed concern over the growing trend of bush fires, which are often started deliberately by individuals hunting for rodents. The brigade warned that such practices pose serious risks to public safety, property, and the environment.

Bush fires significantly impair visibility for drivers, leading to accidents that result in injuries and loss of life,” the brigade stated. They also cause severe health problems, particularly respiratory issues due to smoke inhalation, and can rapidly spread to nearby houses, buildings, and vehicles.

Environmentally, the fires have devastating effects destroying wildlife habitats, killing animals directly, while also damaging soil quality, contaminating water sources, and severely degrading air quality to hazardous levels.

We therefore urge members of the public to exercise greater responsibility and explore alternative, safer methods of pest control instead of setting fires.

Emergency Contact Numbers:

• Airtel: 0971 133 676
• MTN: 0969 072 410
• Chief Fire Officer: 0977 321 251
• Deputy Chief Fire Officer: +260 977 427 294

We are calling on all residents of Kabwe and surrounding areas to report any suspicious bush fires immediately to prevent further incidents.

GOVERNMENT HANDS OVER K5.4 MILLION CDF AMBULANCES IN KABWE DISTRICT.

Residents of Kabwe District in Central Province received a major boost to emergency healthcare today as the government handed over two ambulances during the official opening of a cancer clinic at Kwame Nkrumah University.

Speaking as Guest of Honour, Kabwe District Commissioner Mr. Lennox Shimwambwa thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for providing the ambulances, purchased under the 2024 Constituency Development Fund allocation.

Mr. Shimwambwa said the New Dawn government has delivered one ambulance each for Bwacha and Kabwe Central constituencies to improve health service delivery and ensure patients referred to hospitals are transported without delay.

He explained that the ambulances will serve all 42 health facilities in the district and warned against any misuse of the vehicles.

Acting Town Clerk of Kabwe Municipal Council Mr. Christopher Mtonga said the handover shows that the decentralisation policy is working, with residents seeing tangible development projects delivered through CDF.

The two ambulances form part of the K2.7 million CDF allocation under the 2023 Presidential directive for all constituencies to purchase ambulances. The vehicles were procured at a total cost of K5.4 million.
