On 25th May 1963, African leaders established the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The OAU, now the African Union (AU), was created to promote unity and solidarity among African states, support the liberation of African peoples and advance the continentโs social and economic development.
That is why 25th May is commemorated annually as Africa Freedom Day (Africa Day).

Today marked the conclusion of the three-day planning meeting convened by the Zambia Law Development Commission together with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts and various stakeholders on the review of the Sports Council Act at the Reddy Convention Center in Lusaka.
Over the course of the meeting, participants reviewed and refined the concept note and budget developed for the project, while engaging in discussions aimed at strengthening and modernising the legal framework governing the sports sector in Zambia. The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry, sports federations, associations and other key stakeholders, all contributing towards the development of responsive and progressive sports legislation.
Following the successful conclusion of the planning meeting, the next stage of the process will involve the holding of a desk review meeting, whose intended outcome is the development of a comprehensive report. Thereafter, a drafting meeting will be convened with the objective of preparing a Bill for the proposed legislation.
The review process reflects continued efforts towards ensuring that the legal and institutional framework governing sports in Zambia remains relevant, effective and responsive to the evolving needs of the sector.

ZLDC HOLDS PLANNING MEETING ON THE REVIEW OF THE SPORTS COUNCIL ACT
Today, 19th May 2026, the Zambia Law Development Commission, together with various stakeholders, convened a planning meeting at the Reddy Convention Centre on the review of the Sports Council Act, with additional participants joining virtually. The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts, sports federations, and various sports associations, all committed to contributing towards the development of a modern, effective, and responsive legal framework for Zambiaโs sports sector.
The planning meeting is particularly significant as the current Sports Council Act has increasingly struggled to address the evolving realities of modern sports administration and the business of sport. Among the key issues identified are governance gaps, concerns surrounding Board composition, and the sectorโs overdependence on government funding, which continues to hinder athlete support and sports infrastructure development.
The review process seeks to strengthen governance structures, enhance operational efficiency, and position Zambiaโs sports sector for sustainable growth and increased international competitiveness.

Yesterday, we joined the world in commemorating World Book Day. The tools may have evolved over the past few years, but our commitment to knowledge remains unchanged. At ZLDC, books continue to inform, inspire, and shape law reform. Different era, same commitment. โ
