Today’s spotlight is on Ms. Eugenia Zulu, the CDC Zambia Grants Management Team Lead.

Congratulations to Eugenia on being named the Locally Employed Staff of the Year for the U.S. Mission in Zambia! Her exceptional performance and innovative approach to overcoming challenges in the CDC Zambia Grants Office have earned her this well-deserved recognition.

Eugenia demonstrated remarkable resilience and resourcefulness in addressing significant staffing shortages that began in September 2023. Despite the workforce crisis, she managed to maintain the operations of the Grants Office effectively. The office is responsible for overseeing cooperative agreement mechanisms valued at over $130 million. These agreements are crucial for implementing CDC’s entire health portfolio, highlighting the importance of her role.

In the midst of performing duties, for what should have been a team of 5 staff members, Eugenia also incorporated innovation and excellence in her recommendation to establish south-to-south support from other CDC country offices. This resulted in the CDC Zambia Office receiving direct staff assistance and support from 4 country offices, CDC Rwanda, Ethiopia, Namibia, and Haiti.

Once again, congratulations to Eugenia on this well-deserved recognition as LES Staff of the Year!

Today we join the global community to commemorate .

The United States government’s theme for is “Collective Action: Sustain and Accelerate HIV Progress.”

The United States has partnered with Zambia on public health for over two decades. In that time, the average Zambian life expectancy has increased by 20 years from 44 in 2000 to 64 in 2024!

Today, through the support of the U.S. government, nearly 1.3 million Zambians are being provided with life-saving HIV treatment free of charge.

This year alone, the U.S. government through The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has conducted over 5.4 million HIV tests and identified over 125,000 new positive cases. Out of this number, more than 114,000 representing 91% have been put on life saving anti-retroviral therapy. Efforts at various health facilities are under way to ensure the remaining positives are tracked and put on treatment.

also marks the10 year celebration of the announcement of PEPFAR’s (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored & Safe) program. This program has reached millions of adolescent girls & young women around the world, reducing new HIV infections through a package that includes PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) access, school support, and violence prevention.

As we look toward the future, we must all work together to sustain gains we have made and accelerate progress toward ending HIV as a public health threat by 2030. In the next few years leading to 2030, together, we should transform the approach from an HIV emergency response to a sustained one led by government and local entities.

Join us today in commemorating as we come together to remember, support, and empower those affected by HIV/AIDS.
