2026 World Cancer Day (WCD) Awareness Walk

04/02/2026

2026 WORLD CANCER DAY (WCD)

The National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) joins the rest of the globe and other local stakeholders to commemorate the World Cancer Day (WCD) that is commemorated annually on 4th February and serves as a global initiative to raise awareness about cancer, promote its prevention, early detection and treatment, and mobilize action to reduce the cancer burden. The day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) in support of the objectives of the World Cancer Declaration.

The theme for the 2026 World Cancer Day Commemoration is “United by Unique: Providing access to Cancer Care, A Healthier Zambia” This theme emphasizes placing people at the Center of cancer care and highlights the importance of addressing individual needs while remaining united on the global fight against cancer. It recognizes that while we are united in our goals, every person’s experience, needs, and journey with cancer are unique. Through collective action, advocacy, and shared responsibility, meaningful progress can be made in reducing the global impact of cancer.

Nutrition plays a critical, two-pronged role in cancer: aiding in prevention through healthy, plant-forward diets and supporting treatment by maintaining strength, managing side effects, and preventing malnutrition. A balanced intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains reduces risk, while proper, often specialized, nutrition during treatment helps patients tolerate therapies better.

VALIDATION REVIEW OF THE NATIONAL FOOD AND NUTRITION POLICY
The National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) under the Office of the Vice President (OVP) is conducting a three day workshop on the validation of the revised National Food and Nutrition Policy (NFNP) which is taking place at Mulungushi Conference Centre from today Tuesday 4th to 6th November 2025.

Since the formulation of the 2006 National Food and Nutrition Policy (NFNP), Zambia made notable progress in improving its population's nutritional status, particularly in maternal and child health as well as food security. However, significant challenges remain, including weak multi-sectoral response which undermines the food and nutrition interventions government has been implementing. Strengthening collaboration across government, partners and communities is essential for sustainable improvements in food and nutrition outcomes. As such Government has over the past years embarked on a process of reviewing the 2006 National Food and Nutrition Policy (NFNP). Consultative processes and the revised Policy represent a multi-sectoral approach to food and nutrition programming, emphasizing coordinated efforts across the whole of society approach through Government line ministries, development partners, the private sector, and civil society as well as communities.

This Policy prioritizes inclusivity, resilience, and sustainability of the food systems, recognizing that addressing food and nutrition security requires collaborated efforts across all key sectors such as health, agriculture, education, social protection as well as water and sanitation.
Our collective vision is that by 2035, we will have a Zambia free from all forms of malnutrition, where every individual has access to adequate, safe, and nutritious food, contributing to healthy and productive lives. The revised Policy is a national commitment to ensuring that food and nutrition security are prioritized as fundamental rights for all Zambians.
