Vice President, Inonge Wina, says government is eager to allow business entities to go into maize export and other commodities.
Mrs. Wina, however says government cannot allow maize export at the moment because it has a challenge of ensuring that there are enough maize stocks in the country to respond to the requirement of the country’s strategic food reserves.
She said government had targeted to purchase 1 million metric tons of maize through FRA, the Food Reserve Agency but that the target has not been met due to private grain marketers who went in the field early to purchase maize from farmers.
The Vice President said that government was forced to put in measures to ban the export of maize due to rampant smuggling of maize into neighbouring countries to ensure that the country is food secure.
She said the FRA Act is before parliament in view of amending it to ensure that permits are given to business entities that want to export maize.
Mrs Wina said this yesterday when she met members of Chipata Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Chipata.
Chipata District Farmers Association Coordinator Vigil Malambo earlier complained that despite the province recording a bumper harvest every year, the maize buying price has not been welcomed by the farmers.
He said this has resulted into many farmers opting to smuggle their maize to neighbouring countries where they offer good prices, making the government lose out on revenue.
Mr Malambo asked government to make a deliberate policy which should allow the private sector to apply for permits to export maize and mealie meal to neighbouring countries.

Kawambwa district Kawambwa district co-operative UnionKawambwa district co-operative UnionKawambwa district co-operative Union Union as the warehouse manager for this year's FISP fertilizer and seed we where visited by the provincial and district ministry of Agriculture doing monitoring and evaluation , the provincial Agriculture coodinator officer and the district Agriculture coodinator officer. The ministry is imprest .

The PACO recommend the work the kawambwa district cooperative Union is doing and advised us to continue with the good job. He further said that the government has allocated resources to intensify monitoring the production of all the received crops in the field.

Farmers need to take this opportunity seriously.

The farmers who will not utilize this opportunity to the fullest will be blacklisted from the program next farming season in order to accommodate other productive farmers who have not benefitted previously.

It's raining heavily in kawambwa , as the district cooperative Union we are almost at 85% fertilizer and seed distribution, hence we urge farmers to start land preparations as soon as possible. We have achieved this from the time our own able Hon. Nickson Chilangwa, MPHon. Nickson Chilangwa, MPHon. Nickson Chilangwa, MP minister of Luapula province and our own kawambwa central member of parliament flagged off the distribution of FISP 9 days ago.
