Learners Set to Benefit from Sewing Project in Marondera
Story by Nathan Mubwanda
MARONDERA – Learners at Matukwa and Dhombi secondary schools, together with three primary schools in Marondera, have received sewing machines aimed at promoting practical skills and youth empowerment.
The donation was made during a community development programme organised by Youth Sportlight in partnership with the Islamic community at Matukwa Secondary School on 13 June 2026.
Businessman Mr Joram Mungate, who was the guest of honour, handed over 15 sewing machines to Matukwa and Dhombi secondary schools, while Matukwa, Chiparawe and Dhombi primary schools each received five machines.
Speaking at the event, Mr Mungate said the initiative was designed to equip young people with practical skills that can help them become self-reliant after leaving school.
"We have seen it as a good thing to go into communities, especially schools that cater for the young generation. With the support of the Islamic community, this initiative brings people together and helps children become future entrepreneurs," said Mr Mungate.
The programme was attended by representatives from the Islamic community, including Marondera District Schools Inspector,The Provincial Chairperson for moslem Pastors Shear Pungulani, Youth Sportlight National Vice Chairperson Mr Norman Deeds, Mashonaland East Provincial Chairperson Ms Vimbai Dumbura, Secretary for Administration and Programmes Ms Praise Chifamba, as well as school heads and teachers.
During a tour of Matukwa Secondary School, Mr Mungate noted the need for improved learning infrastructure and pledged to construct two classroom blocks, toilets and boreholes to support the schools.
"After touring the school, I have seen areas where assistance is needed. We will work towards building classroom blocks, providing sanitation facilities and drilling boreholes to improve the learning environment for learners," he said.
Youth Sportlight officials said the programme forms part of ongoing efforts to develop communities and empower young people through skills-based projects.
