We are extremely saddened by the news of the death of photographer, teacher and collector, Yasser Alwan. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
Yasser was a great friend of Akkasah: Photography Archive and his collection of 19th-20th century photography of Egypt and Sudan was our founding collection.
In addition to building his own collection over decades, Yasser also worked tirelessly with the Collège de la Sainte Famille CSF- Officiel in Helwan, to ensure their photographs were conserved and digitally archived.

Yasser wrote about his collecting in Jadaliyya
"I never planned to collect photographs like these, preferring to make my own. But these images drew me into a kindred relationship. They were made by men and women who were my kin"
Yasser's own photography was strikingly empathetic and enchanting: https://yasseralwan.net
