500 sacks of coffee – according to popular legend, these were left behind by the retreating Ottoman army after the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683, an event often credited with inspiring Vienna’s coffeehouse tradition. Just two years later, in 1685, the Armenian merchant Owanes Astouatzatur received imperial permission to serve coffee and opened what is considered Vienna’s first coffeehouse. By the early 20th century, cafés had become vital meeting places for intellectuals, writers and artists such as Gustav Klimt and Sigmund Freud. Functioning as “extended living rooms”, people gathered to debate, write, read newspapers, or simply linger over coffee.
Even today, spending hours in a café is an essential part of Viennese life, as illustrated by this 1952 photograph of the famous Café Landtmann in Austria’s capital. In 2011, this coffeehouse culture was recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
