🇩🇪 Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul travelled to New York to campaign for Germany’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the 2027/28 term. 🇺🇳

In addition to meeting many ministers, UN ambassadors and diplomats, the Minister’s speech in a meeting with representatives of the African Group at the UN was key highlight.

Minister Wadephul: „We are ready to stand up for respect, justice, and peace“ - these core values guide the German candidacy, while thematically focusing on conflict prevention, crises resolution, climate and security, if elected. Germany is also committed to a reform of the UN system to ensure among other things better representation for smaller nations.

The UN General Assembly will vote on June 3rd.

🤝🇺🇳 Together for a stronger, more inclusive global order.

How can insurance help societies become more resilient in the face of climate change?

This question was at the center of this week’s German Embassy Climate Talk in the UAE, which brought together experts from the insurance, finance, and climate sectors for an engaging discussion on climate risk, resilience, and sustainable finance.

The discussion highlighted that climate impacts are already causing billions of dollars in damages globally every year — and that large parts of these losses remain uninsured, particularly in developing countries.

Our speakers explored how insurance solutions, climate risk financing, and innovative investment mechanisms can help communities recover more quickly from climate-related disasters while also supporting the transition towards climate-neutral economies.

The panel also emphasized the important role of insurance companies not only as insurers, but also as major institutional investors with significant influence on sustainable investment and the global energy transition.

A sincere thank you to all speakers, panelists, and participants for contributing to this insightful exchange.

The Climate Talks, launched by the German Embassy in 2023, continue to serve as a platform connecting policymakers, experts, businesses, and civil society around key climate issues in the UAE and beyond.

On Wednesday, representatives from over 60 countries gathered in Berlin to send a clear message: STOP!
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan must end.

Together with 🇫🇷, 🇺🇸, 🇬🇧, 🇪🇺 and the African Union as co-host, Germany brought together delegations from around the world in Berlin: over 60 countries, representatives from more than 50 Sudanese and international non-governmental organizations, numerous UN agencies, international financial institutions and Sudan’s African neighbors.

One common goal: to create sustainable solutions - and envision a democratic future for Sudan.

The situation for the population is critical. Therefore: End the suffering. Mobilize humanitarian aid. Pave a genuine path to peace. Not sometime in the future, but now.

Following the Sudan conferences in Paris in 2024 and London in 2025, Berlin has sent a strong signal: Peace in Sudan concerns us all. Because every life counts. Because peace can only be achieved together.

The hopes for additional humanitarian aid raised at the conference were exceeded: €1.49 billion was mobilized. Germany has already provided €160 million for Sudan and its neighboring countries in 2025 and, with today’s financial pledge of an additional €230 million, underscores that Germany is and will remain a reliable supporter of the people of Sudan.
