The ocean is the origin and the engine of all life on this planet — and it is under threat. How can we stop marine pollution and safeguard the most fundamental of our planet’s life-support systems? According to the United Nations, marine life is suffering irreparable damage from a combination of chemical pollution and waste dumped in the world’s oceans each year. Marine debris has formed five giant garbage patches around the world. Plastics are set to outnumber fish in the seas by 2050.

Chemical fertilisers, that ultimately make their way to the oceans, are accelerating the development of “dead zones”, areas where the lack of oxygen makes it impossible for marine life to exist. Our oceans, which cover two thirds of the Earth’s surface, supply 70 percent of the oxygen we breathe, 97 percent of our water and precious nutrients for human health. How can we break the vicious cycle of pollution before these vital supplies become unable to support our well-being and that of the planet? A growing number of initiatives across the world are now seeking to turn the tide on the destruction of our oceans.

What resources and knowledge can the oceans and their inhabitants provide? How can we derive benefits from the oceans without further damaging their delicate ecosystems? How should access to the oceans be regulated? How can we use technology to strike a balance between progress and preservation?

Every year, on March 20, the International Day of ‘La Francophonie’ is celebrated around the world, in French-speaking countries but also in those where the French language is taught.

The Mauritius Pavilion had the privilege of welcoming H.E. Louise Mushikiwabo, Secretary General of Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie on Sunday the 20th of March 2022.

H.E. Louise Mushikiwabo is the fourth and current Secretary General of Organisation internationale de la Francophonie and the third African to take leadership of the organisation. She previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Rwanda from 2009 to 2018.

The theme of the fashion show was “Fashion Innov 1.0: Roots of the Future”.

The fashion show has depicted the evolution of clothing in Mauritius from historical to contemporary fashion and the future trend towards sustainability through the collections developed by the FDI and local apparel manufacturers, with the support of Carlin International.

78 Outfits were showcased, designed by 22 Final year students at the Fashion design Institute.

The audience was composed mainly of Press and social media influencers in the Fashion and Lifestyle segment in the UAE, buyers in the Textile and Fashion industry and key stakeholders that have supported the Mauritius Pavilion over the past 6 months. Thanks to the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority a close partner in this event, some of the finest social media influencers of the region were invited to cover the fashion show.

In the margin of Expo2020 Dubai and under the banner of the Mauritius Pavilion at Expo2020, the Economic Development Board (EDB) is organising the Mauritius Freeport and Logistics week from 21 to 25 February 2022, in collaboration with the Mauritius Port Authority (MPA), the Cargo Handling Corporation Ltd (CHCL), the Airport of Mauritius (AML), the State Trading Corporation (STC), Freeport Developers and the Freeport Operators Association.

The objective of this event is to showcase the attributes of the Mauritius Freeport as a reliable, trusted, and efficient logistics, distribution and value addition platform linking the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. The participants leveraged on the recent ranking of the Mauritius Freeport in the Annual Global Free Zones of the Year 2021 by the fDi intelligence magazine, a specialist division of the Financial Times, whereby Mauritius was ranked as the second best Freezone in the world and first in Africa.
