Sonali Bank turns BDT 5,949 crore capital deficit into BDT 83 crore surplus.

➡️ State-owned Sonali Bank PLC has turned its capital position around, moving from a deficit to a surplus through tighter controls on defaulted loans, cautious lending, and stronger recovery efforts.

Managing Director and CEO Md Shawkat Ali Khan told The Business Standard that eliminating the capital shortfall was the bank’s biggest achievement in 2025. While audited accounts for 2024 showed a capital deficit of Tk5,949 crore, provisional figures for 2025 indicate the gap has been fully covered, resulting in a surplus of Tk83 crore.

Provisional accounts as of December 2025 also show no provision shortfall, with a small surplus of Tk6 crore. The bank’s operational profit rose 40.79% year-on-year to Tk8,017 crore in 2025.

Break-Even Point (BEP):

I. Meaning of Break-Even Point

The break-even point is the level of output or sales at which a firm neither earns profit nor suffers loss. At this point, the total revenue is exactly equal to total cost. The business only recovers its costs.

II. Axes of the Diagram

(i) Horizontal Axis (X-Axis) – Quantity
•The horizontal axis represents the quantity of output produced or sold.
•Movement from left to right shows an increase in production or sales.

(ii) Vertical Axis (Y-Axis) – Cost / Revenue
The vertical axis shows money values, including:
•Total Revenue
•Fixed Cost
•Total Cost

III. Total Revenue Line

•The Total Revenue (TR) line slopes upward from left to right.
•This shows that as quantity sold increases, revenue also increases.
•The straight upward shape indicates that the price per unit is constant.
•TR starts from the origin because zero sales generate zero revenue.

IV. Fixed Cost Line

•The Fixed Cost (FC) line is drawn parallel to the X-axis.
•It remains constant at all levels of output.

Fixed costs include expenses such as:
•Rent
•Salaries
•Machinery charges
These costs must be paid even if output is zero.

V. Total Cost Line
The Total Cost (TC) line starts above the origin because fixed cost exists even when production is zero.
•It slopes upward as output increases due to variable costs.

•Total Cost = Fixed Cost + Variable Cost.

•The TC line increases with quantity, showing higher production leads to higher cost.

VI. Break-Even Point (BEP)

The Break-Even Point is where the Total Revenue line intersects the Total Cost line.

This point is clearly marked and highlighted in the diagram.

At this point:
•Total Revenue = Total Cost
•Profit = 0
•Loss = 0

VII. Situation Before and After Break-Even Point

(i) Before BEP (Loss Region)

Total Cost is greater than Total Revenue.
The firm is operating at a loss.
This region lies to the left of the break-even point.

(ii) After BEP (Profit Region)

Total Revenue becomes greater than Total Cost.
The firm starts earning profit.
This region lies to the right of the break-even point.
