NEW MOVES

The JAMAICAN DIASPORA

IN ANTIGUA & BARBUDA

TRANSITIONING INTO NEW PASSION

It is with sincere respect and joy that I wish to inform you of the honour to have served the People and Government of Jamaica particularly the diaspora living in Antigua & Barbuda for an extended period of four and a half years.

As I transitioned into my new passion on the 1 March 2024 I wish to thank the receiving state of Antigua & Barbuda, the various departments of government especially the Immigration Department's team who worked tirelessly to assist our nationals to regularise their status and the Business community, the members of the Diaspora Engagement Group, the wider community and my team who held the line daily to assist in the 'Labour of Love' despite the myriad of challenges encountered.

The support and kindness extended to me, as the Honorary Consul during this period from the People of Antigua & Barbuda has been exceptional, and I wish to express heartfelt gratitude for your superb assistance.

It was a period where we cemented a strong bond and established lasting friendships which will only auger well for the sustainable mutually beneficial development of the two sovereign nations- Jamaica & Antigua and Barbuda.

I am anxious to explore new avenues for personal growth and expertise, globally.

I feel a sense of pride in the hope that I have been able to achieve major successes within the community, promoting friendship and mutual understanding among our people..

I sincerely hope that you will extend the same wonderful hospitality and cooperation that I have enjoyed to my successor.

Dr. Onika Campbell

On Thursday 18th January 2024, Her Excellency Natalie Campbell-Rodriques, High Commissioner of Jamaica to Antigua and Barbuda, presented her Letter of Introduction to the Honourable Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, who warmly received the High Commissioner and expressed his desire for Her Excellency to utilize her office to strengthen the bilateral relationship between both countries.

Prime Minister Browne remarked that Jamaica is culturally one of the closest to Antigua and Barbuda, due to the similarities in accents, dialect etc., stating that โ€œIt is clear that we all emanated from the same space in West Africa."

He further expressed that โ€œAntigua and Barbuda today is one of the most representative countries of CARICOM due to its diverse population, as our residents are comprised of CARICOM nationals and their descendantsโ€.

Prime Minister Browne, noting that Antigua and Barbuda has a significant Jamaican demographic, expressed that there is an opportunity and market for air link between both countries, as well as the opportunity for trade and capacity building for Antiguans and Barbudans in a host of areas to include sports, culture and economic development.

โ€œIt is in our best interest now to work together to build stronger relations in the best interest of both our countriesโ€.

Prime Minister Browne wished Her Excellency success and health and conveyed the same sentiment to the Honourable Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, who he stated has maintained great relations and alignment with Antigua and Barbuda, especially in international arenas such as the UN, CELAC, OAS etc.

Prime Minister Holness is one of the most respected leaders in the regionโ€ฆ his leadership is being displayed within CARICOM [Heads of Government], on the issue of Haiti as we strive to collectively make our contribution to resolving the violenceโ€.

The High Commissioner also paid a courtesy call to Minister Greene, delving further into discussions on the opportunities for trade and sporting exchanges, noting that โ€œJamaica hosts over 100 students from all over the world who undertake training as athletesโ€.
