It was such a pleasure to catch up with Mr. Sousa Jamba in Luanda.

Mr. Jamba is an award-winning Angolan journalist now based in Zambia. He has worked around the world. But his heart remains in Africa. And it is Zambia that first received him as a little refugee boy who grew up around Mwinilunga, Lusaka, and the Copperbelt. That story alone says everything about what Zambia means to so many Angolans.

Mr. Jamba has spent a lifetime sharing his stories with the world. His writing carries the weight of lived experience — of war, of exile, of belonging, of return. It is the kind of writing that reminds us that Africa’s story is not one story. It is many stories. And each one matters.

We exchanged notes on Africa. On Angola-Zambia relations. On the Lobito Corridor. On Chief Chibwika. On business. On culture. On music. On the deep ties that bind our two peoples long before diplomacy gave those ties a name.

This is what diplomacy looks like at its best. Not always in conference rooms and formal settings. Sometimes it is two Africans sitting together, talking honestly about where we have come from and where we are going.

Mr. Jamba, it was a privilege. Zambia is proud to be part of your story. And Angola is richer for the voice you carry into the world.

Cape (Cabo) Verde’s Tubarões Azuis are going to the FIFA World Cup 2026. For the first time in history. And earlier this year they came right here to Luanda and beat Angola on Angolan soil. That is not a small thing.

Today I called on His Excellency Ambassador Júlio César Freire de Morais at the Embassy of Cabo Verde in Luanda to congratulate him and the people of Cabo Verde on this historic achievement. As Zambians, we know something about football dreams, about what it means for a small nation to dare greatly on the world’s biggest stage. We celebrate with our brothers and sisters in Cabo Verde with everything we have. Go Tubarões Azuis.

We had a long, warm, and deeply African conversation. I told Ambassador Morais about Zambia. About the Victoria Falls, one of the seven natural wonders of the world, with the greater and most spectacular portion on the Zambian side. About the Zambezi River, which gives our nation its very name. About our wildlife, our people, our warmth, and the growing opportunities for trade, tourism, and education that Zambia offers to the continent and the world. I invited him and his family to come and see it all for themselves. He is already looking forward to it.

We talked about what Zambia and Cabo Verde can do together. Two countries separated by an ocean of geography but connected by a shared African spirit. Trade. Tourism. Education. People-to-people ties. The foundations are there. We just need to build on them.

Beyond football, Cabo Verde is a country of extraordinary culture, music, and resilience. A small island nation that has turned the ocean into a bridge rather than a barrier. Its people carry the warmth of those Atlantic islands to every corner of the world, and wherever they go, Cabo Verde goes with them.

The Embassy of the Republic of Zambia in Luanda is concurrently accredited to the Republic of Cabo Verde. I look forward to serving as Zambia’s Ambassador to Cabo Verde soon. As an embassy, we want Cabo Verde to know that Zambia sees her, values her, and is coming.
