🌿✨️Happy Wetlands Month once more American Samoa 🇦🇸🌿
From the pala in Leone and Nuuuli, to the taufusi in Aunuu, Ofu, Olosega and Ta'ŭ, hear from some of our amazing elders how the taro, laufala, Paõgo, and shellfishes from our wetlands have been a source of their upbringing through culture and traditions.
What wetland resources do you or your family use and from which wetland are you proud to share? 💧🌿

The Department of Commerce Coastal Resources Management (CRM) Program continues final wetland delineation efforts as the project enters its last phase. Since its launch in 2022, this initiative has focused on the identification, mapping, and documentation of wetland resources throughout American Samoa in support of coastal resource management and environmental protection efforts.
Conducted by Maui Environmental Consultancy (MEC) in coordination with the Department of Commerce CZM Program, today’s field activities were successfully completed on the islands of Ofu and Olosega as part of the Manu‘a Islands delineation project. These field assessments provide critical data to support planning and decision-making through the Project Notification and Review System (PNRS), while also advancing long-term wetland conservation and resource management efforts across the Territory.
Today, the team will continue to Fitiuta to complete the final phase of wetland delineation activities within the Manu‘a Islands.

🌿✨ Happy Wetlands Month, American Samoa! ✨🌿
On May 14, another amazing group of future Wetlands Stewards joined our Coastal Resources Management Division for an educational tour of the wetlands in Masefau and Aoa. We shared the importance and benefits of our wetlands through this year’s theme: “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.” 🌱🌺
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Department of Education and SPICC for the opportunity to educate our students in the field, along with our wonderful chaperones for their support throughout the day. We also sincerely thank the village mayors of Masefau and Aoa for warmly welcoming us into their communities.
Fa’afetai tele lava to everyone who helped make this day meaningful as we continue to celebrate and protect our precious wetlands! 💚
