It’s that time of year again everyone, Bloomsday!

Every 16 June, an annual celebration of Irish literature takes place to honour one of the country’s most iconic literary figures, James Joyce.

To mark Bloomsday this year, the Embassy of Ireland will be placing books by contemporary Irish authors, along with some classics in the “offene Bücherschränke” of Stadt Wien and Klagenfurt and in schools and universities alike.

Preparations are well underway and we will be posting details on where to locate the books 📚 on our website and social media, so watch this space for where to find a gift from us by your favourite Irish author!!

Ireland is a proud member of the Diplomats for Equality Vienna group, which marked the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia on 17 May 2026 with the following statement

“We – The Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the Delegation of the European Union to the International Organisations in Vienna, and the diplomatic missions of Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Mexico, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), UN-Globe and the Diplomatische Akademie Wien – Vienna School of International Studies - all welcome 17 May as the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), to reaffirm the equality and dignity of LGBTI persons, and to stand firmly against all discrimination and in particular to oppose the criminalisation of consensual same-sex relations which is contrary to international human rights law. Human rights are universal and apply equally to all people everywhere. That is why today and every day we work to address the ongoing discrimination against LGBTI persons globally.

We support the IDAHOBIT 2026 theme, “At the core of democracy”. It reminds us that any society cannot be complete without equality, dignity, and the full inclusion of LGBTI persons. It also celebrates the contributions of human rights defenders, civil society organisations and the millions of allies who support equality and diversity across the world.

We are united in our support of diversity and our shared commitment to ensuring that those who identify as LGBTI persons can enjoy the same rights and freedoms as everyone else. We celebrate and support inclusive societies that uphold the dignity and full and equal enjoyment of human rights by LGBTI persons and endeavour to ensure all individuals in society are treated equally in all spheres of society.

We invite you to support these goals, and to follow our coverage on social media via .”
