Today marks the 46th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW).

The CCW was a landmark agreement aimed at reducing the use of weapons that can cause severe and unnecessary suffering, including weapons that may not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

46 years on, the CCW remains highly relevant. As landmine stockpiles continue to grow and new technologies create new ways of causing harm, the Convention continues to play an important role in protecting people from the humanitarian impact of armed conflict.

Last week marked the third annual meeting of the Austria Women’s Peace Conference hosted by the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF Austria). The conference highlighted the importance of the gender perspective in peacebuilding. James Cooke, UNODA Programme Management Officer and Gender Focal Point, contributed insights on the gendered impacts of weapons, the underrepresentation of women in disarmament spaces, and recent trends in global military expenditure and its impact on gender equality.

UNODA Vienna advocates for women’s leadership and integration of gender perspectives in the disarmament field. Yesterday marked the release of The Road to Zero, The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization's short film commemorating the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty’s 30th anniversary.

UNODA Vienna’s Office Chief, Rebecca Jovin, was honored to join Dr. Robert Floyd (Executive Secretary of the CTBTO), Ambassador Gustavo Zlauvinen (Permanent Mission of Argentina to International Organizations in Vienna) and Dr. Nortin Titus (Namibian Embassy and Permanent Mission in Vienna) in a panel moderated by The Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, reflecting on the CTBT’s relevance today and the path forward.

A full house at Vienna City Hall to mark 30 years since the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty opened for signature.

The CTBTO anniversary event brought together the host country 🇦🇹, UN Vienna leadership, the diplomatic community and young leaders to reflect on the CTBT’s journey: from the diplomacy that brought the Treaty into being, to the growth of its global monitoring system, the international norm against nuclear testing, and the wider benefits of its data.

Thirty years on, it was also a moment to look ahead: a reminder of what diplomacy, science and international cooperation can achieve, and why advancing the global nuclear-test ban remains essential for present and future generations.

Meaningful youth engagement also means connecting networks and creating space to learn from one another. 🌐

That was the spirit of the 4th student visit organised by the Primakov Center to UNODA in Vienna. This time, students joined Youth Leader Fund (YLF) alumni and members of the CTBTO Youth Group and the Nuclear Young Generation (UN-NYG) for a peer-to-peer roundtable to share insights, build connections and explore new ways to get involved and contribute to disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control. 🤝
