🇺🇸🤝🇦🇹 Welcome to Austria!

Last week, about 180 U.S. teaching assistants started their academic year at orientations in St. Pölten, Lower Austria, and Saalbach Hinterglemm, Salzburg. They'll teach in classrooms all across Austria and talk with young Austrians about what life in the United States is really like.

Our Public Diplomacy team joined both orientations to share the educational resources offered by the Embassy and answer any questions from the incoming USTA cohort. This year we also presented a new set of teaching materials for discussing the 250th anniversary of the United States in the classroom. 🎉

🇺🇸🕯️🇦🇹 On Tuesday, October 6, Deputy Chief of Mission Kami Witmer, Defense Attaché Jonathan Drake, and Office of Defense Cooperation Chief Charles Flanagan attended the opening of the new Gunskirchen memorial, joining Austrian officials and Holocaust survivor Avigdor Neumann to mark this solemn occasion.

Gunskirchen was a satellite camp of Mauthausen, established in the final months of World War II. It served as a collection camp for Jewish prisoners, predominantly Hungarian Jews, brought there by death marches from the Hungarian border. Conditions were catastrophic. Up to 200 people died every day.

On May 4, 1945, soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 71st Infantry Division discovered the camp. What they found was beyond description.

The new memorial, opened by the Mauthausen Komitee Österreich, ensures that the history of Gunskirchen and the fate of its victims will not be forgotten.

We are grateful to the Mauthausen Committee and our Austrian partners for their continued commitment to Holocaust remembrance and education.

🇺🇸🇧🇪🏅 And the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics goes to… Belgian-American physicist Francis Halzen from the University of Wisconsin-Madison on "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin." 🧊

Francis Halzen realized that ice at the South Pole could be used to track particles known as neutrinos. His vision and scientific leadership have been fundamental for the IceCube Neutrino Observatory – a cubic kilometer of ice equipped with light sensors. ❄️🔭 Using IceCube, researchers can capture neutrinos from extremely energy-rich processes in the distant universe.

Neutrinos are everywhere, but they do not make themselves known. They pass all the way through the Earth and through our bodies without us noticing. Very rarely, a single neutrino will interact with an atomic nucleus, which makes it possible for someone with the right equipment to discover them. 🌍
The neutrino interactions continuously collected by IceCube will provide researchers with novel knowledge about the violent settings in which high-energy neutrinos can be created – and could even reveal previously unknown cosmic phenomena. 🌌

🇺🇸 🇩🇪 🏅 And the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine goes to… Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics".

As Nobel Prize explains, "optogenetics is a method that makes it possible to show how nerve cells shape memories, feelings, and behaviors in the living brain." German scientists Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel discovered a protein called channelrhodopsin, and U.S. scientist Karl Deisseroth from Stanford University transformed this protein into a light-controlled switch for nerve cells. Their work laid the foundation of a new era in neuroscience. 🔬

Ambassador Fisher had the pleasure of meeting cadets from West Point - The U.S. Military Academy and midshipmen from the United States Naval Academy studying at the Theresian Military Academy in Wiener Neustadt this semester.

Exchanges like this bring together the next generation of U.S. and Austrian military leaders, learning side by side and building the trust and partnerships that will strengthen our security cooperation for decades to come.

🇺🇸🎓🇦🇹 On September 24, Ambassador Fisher hosted the annual Fulbright Reception, welcoming returning Austrian grantees and newly arrived U.S. Fulbright participants to Vienna.

🎉 This year, we celebrated 75 years of Fulbright Austria: seventy-five years of connecting Americans and Austrians across classrooms, research labs, and communities. This legacy continues with every Fulbrighter in that room.

🤝 To the returning Austrian grantees: your invaluable experience in the United States is an asset, for both our countries. To the newly arrived U.S. participants: willkommen in Österreich! You are now part of something that has been building for three quarters of a century.

🙏 Thank you to the Fulbright Austria board, staff, alumni, and partner organizations for your continued commitment to this partnership. We look forward to the next 75 years.
