Independent accreditation protects our profession:

Safeguarding the integrity of social work in education

National registration is sparking important conversations about the future of social work in education. In this context, it’s important to make visible AASW’s role in safeguarding the standards that protect our profession and the communities we serve.

Accreditation is more than a process. It’s how we preserve the integrity of the degree that every social worker relies on. As one member told us: “We don’t want a registration scheme to water down the degree. We want to preserve the integrity of the profession by setting our qualification as the minimum entry requirement.”

Because accreditation is independent and profession-led, it keeps the quality of social work education in the hands of social workers. That independence is critical – and must be preserved. Members consistently tell us they value knowing that their colleagues have met the same rigorous benchmark. “We highly value our degree. We want a registration model where we know other registered social workers have the qualification that we worked so hard to achieve.”
Accreditation builds trust. It assures the public and employers that social workers have been taught and assessed against nationally recognised standards.

This is why the AASW is reinforcing our role as the independent accrediting body for social work education. It strengthens the profession today – and protects it for the future.

Attention: All Social Workers in Australia

Re: Important updates regarding protecting the title of social worker – AASW shares our letter to SWRB on national registration

In late August, the AASW wrote to the Social Workers Registration Board of South Australia (SWRB) to express serious concerns about a proposed “experience pathway” that would allow individuals without a recognised social work qualification to register as social workers.

We are sharing this information because AASW members are asking about experience and educational pathways proposed by the SWRB.

The AASW position is unwavering: registration must protect the public and the profession by ensuring only qualified social workers are recognised. Anything less places vulnerable people at risk and undermines decades of work to establish proper recognition of social work.

In the letter we shared this:

I refer you to the pages 24–26 of the Report of the Joint Committee on the Social Workers Registration Bill 2018.pdf which states that the “AASW is unequivocal in its position that only those with formal tertiary social work qualifications should be registered.” This reflected the position of the AASW then, and it remains our uncompromising position today.

The letter emphasises that social work is not an occupation that can be entered through ad hoc experience. It requires accredited education, theory, ethics, evidence-based practice, and at least 1,000 hours of supervised placement.

The AASW is calling for a nationally consistent scheme under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) to safeguard professional integrity and public trust.

The AASW will be taking a range of steps to encourage further unity in the profession as we advocate for national registration.

অস্থায়ী গ্র্যাজুয়েট ভিসা

অস্থায়ী গ্র্যাজুয়েট (485) ভিসার দুটি ধারা রয়েছে:

1. Graduate Work Stream

AASW একটি মূল্যায়ন কর্তৃপক্ষ হিসেবে এই ভিসা সাবক্লাসের জন্য আবেদন গ্রহণ করে।

আবেদনকারীদের দক্ষতা/যোগ্যতা মূল্যায়ন করা হয়।

এই মূল্যায়নের ফলাফল আবেদনকারীরা তাদের অস্থায়ী ভিসা আবেদন জমা দেওয়ার সময় Department of Home Affairs-এ ব্যবহার করতে পারেন।

2. Post-Study Work Stream

এই ধারা তাদের জন্য যারা সম্প্রতি একটি ডিগ্রি বা উচ্চতর যোগ্যতা (অস্ট্রেলিয়ান ব্যাচেলর বা মাস্টার্স ডিগ্রি, গবেষণাভিত্তিক মাস্টার্সের জন্য তিন বছর, এবং পিএইচডি বা ডক্টরেটের জন্য চার বছর) সম্পন্ন করেছেন।

শিক্ষার ক্ষেত্র নির্বিশেষে, এটি শুধুমাত্র অস্ট্রেলিয়ার CRICOS অনুমোদিত প্রতিষ্ঠান থেকে স্নাতক আন্তর্জাতিক শিক্ষার্থীদের জন্য প্রযোজ্য।

এই ধারাটি কেবল তাদের জন্য প্রযোজ্য যারা ৫ নভেম্বর ২০১১ বা তার পরে প্রথম ছাত্র ভিসার জন্য আবেদন করেছেন এবং তা অনুমোদন পেয়েছেন।

MEA টিম আবেদনকারীদের সহায়তা করতে আগ্রহী এবং নতুন অনলাইন প্রক্রিয়ার মাধ্যমে আপনাকে গাইড করতে প্রস্তুত থাকবে, যদি আপনি অস্ট্রেলিয়ায় অভিবাসনের পরিকল্পনা করে থাকেন এবং অভিবাসন ও/অথবা কর্মসংস্থানের জন্য যোগ্য সমাজকর্মী হিসেবে স্বীকৃতি প্রয়োজন হয়।

On behalf of the Australian Government, as a nominated assessing authority, we assess academic social work qualifications by assessing your qualification for migration purposes.

This application form can be used by social workers who would like to apply for an assessment of their AASW accredited social work qualification/s for a Temporary Graduate Visa Subclass 485.

Temporary Graduate Visa
The Temporary Graduate (485) visa has 2 streams:

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Graduate Work stream
The AASW as an Assessing Authority accepts applications for this visa subclass to complete a skills/qualification assessment which applicants can use as part of their temporary visa application to the Dept Home Affairs.

Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) Post-Study Work stream
The Post-Study Work Stream is for international students who have recently graduated with a degree or higher qualification (Australian Bachelor or Masters degree, three years for a research-based Master’s Degree, and four years for a PhD or Doctorate), regardless of their field of study, from an Australian CRICOS approved institution. This stream is available only to persons who applied for, and had been granted, their first student visa on or after 5 November 2011. This ensures that all Post-Study Work stream applicants have been subject to Genuine Temporary Entrant provisions assessment. Applicants for this stream do not need a skills assessment. Applications can be made direct to Dept. Home Affairs.
