🐑🤓 Farm smarter across multiple properties with electronic identification (eID).

In the Southern Flinders, the Clarke family is using eID to track reproduction and weights, improve flock performance, and better manage sheep alongside a busy cropping program.

📊 Start simple, build over time, and gain more flexibility in your system

🌊 Today we celebrate the oceans that support our environment, industries and communities, and the scientists working to understand them.

South Australia’s SARDI Marine Ecosystems team delivers critical research to help us understand and care for our marine environments. Their work spans ecosystem modelling, fisheries science, seagrass restoration, marine biosecurity and ocean monitoring, providing the evidence needed to manage our oceans sustainably.

From restoring seagrass meadows along the Adelaide coast to monitoring marine pests and tracking ocean conditions in real time, their science helps ensure South Australia’s marine ecosystems are sustainable now and into the future.

On World Ocean Day, we recognise their dedication and the impact of their work. Healthy oceans rely on people committed to understanding and protecting them 💙🌊

🌍 Keeping food safe starts long before it reaches your kitchen, and PIRSA plays a vital role in that.

PIRSA oversees food safety across South Australia’s primary production sectors, including meat, eggs, bivalve molluscs and seed sprouts.

By regulating these primary food producing industries, PIRSA helps reduce food‑borne illness, protect public health, maintain consumer confidence and support the strong reputation of SA’s primary industries.

Safe food is everyone’s business, and PIRSA is part of that every step of the way 🍖 🥚 🫛

🍒 What beats the joy of cherries in summer? 🍒

Ask a grower and they’ll tell you; well-timed, mature, climate-resilient cherries, of superior quality, with reduced labour inputs!

SARDI irrigated crops researchers Tim Pitt and Darren Graetz are working alongside Adelaide Hills cherry grower Andy Flavell to optimise and compare various narrow orchard systems (NOS) rooting for these goals.

With over 2000 tonnes of cherries grown in SA annually - more than 18,000 tonnes nationally - this research will help growers evolve their orchards for greater productivity and climate resilience.

Just this week over 100 cherry grower delegates attending the Cherry Growers Australia ‘Cherry 2026’ conference braved stormy conditions to inspect four NOS tree training systems being demonstrated at Andy's Lobethal cherry orchard, including the:

👉 Upright fruiting offshoots (UFO’s) – single cordon
👉 UFO – bi-cordon
👉 Central leader breaking espalier
👉 Narrow V – which looks as the name suggests

Early learnings from each approach are emerging; optimal spacing between rows, seasonal investment of labour required for scoring, shoot selection, and training, along with comparison of support materials: wire mesh vs wire and bamboo, to name a few!

The ‘NOS' for future climate systems' work, funded by Hort Innovation Frontiers, is being applied with tree crops in the Riverland, where potential benefits of NOS in apricots include:

✔️ Rapid ROI
✔️ Fruit quality improvements
✔️ Lower operating costs
✔️ Safer orchards
✔️ Accelerated adoption of AgTech
✔️ Climate resilience

Help stop the spread of Queensland fruit fly with a few simple actions in your garden:

🍊 Promptly pick ripe fruit and vegetables
🍊 Do not move or share fruit and vegetables from outbreak areas
🍊 Prune fruit trees to make harvesting easier next season

Small steps make a big difference in breaking the fruit fly life cycle.

More than 200 participants joined in person and online this week for the Harmful Algal Bloom Science Forum at the South Australian Aquatic Sciences Centre, bringing together researchers, industry, government and community stakeholders to strengthen our understanding of harmful algal blooms and support future collaboration.

The forum highlighted the significant work underway through PIRSA and SARDI to better understand, monitor and respond to algal blooms, including the deployment of six oceanographic moorings across South Australia providing near real-time data on key algal species.

From ecosystem monitoring and forecasting systems to fishery impact assessments and advanced diagnostic testing, these initiatives are helping build the knowledge and capability needed to protect our marine environment, support coastal communities and inform future management decisions.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this important discussion and ongoing research effort.

Young merinos set to make their mark 🐑

The Turretfield Research Centre Team has been busy in the field, marking over 526 lambs ahead of the SA Merino Sire Evaluation Field Day on Friday 12 June.

At the field day, breeders, farmers, and industry representatives will have the chance to get up close and examine:
🐑 Fleece traits including weight, diameter, colour and character
🪰 Skin wrinkle, and face, breech and crutch cover (important for preventing fly strike)
📏 Jaw, face, pastern, and toe morphology

With SA’s sheep industries (including meat, wool and skins) generating annual revenue of around $1.36 billion (and over 58 million kilos of wool!), understanding and optimising Merino reproductive genetics is big business.

🌎 This , we celebrate the leadership of our producers and partners and our continued collaboration to scale solutions that deliver for climate, communities and the economy.

At PIRSA, we’re proud to support primary industry led action helping to ensure South Australian agriculture remains globally competitive in a low-emissions future.

The climate signals are getting stronger, but across South Australia, producers are already responding by:
▪️Implementing the objectives set out in the SA Carbon Farming Roadmap 👉 https://ow.ly/obQV50Z605q
▪️Finding circular solutions for chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated vineyard posts and supporting the development of a national stewardship framework for treated timber.
▪️Partnering in initiatives such as the MLA SA Livestock Sustainable Solutions Program and GRCD Low-Emissions Intensity Farming 👉 https://ow.ly/5p7t50Z605v

Together, these efforts are helping build a more resilient, productive and sustainable future for South Australia's primary industries.
