Stream Highlight: Revolutionary Process in Allende’s Chile (1970-1973) 🇨🇱

In the early 1970s, Chile became the site of a dramatic struggle. Workers occupied factories. New forms of workers’ power emerged. Salvador Allende’s government attempted a parliamentary road to socialism. And when capitalism was threatened, the ruling class violently struck back.

This three-part stream at Socialism Conference 2026 explores the revolutionary process in Chile: the rise of the cordones industriales, the contradictions of reformism, and the counterrevolution that brought Pinochet to power in September 1973.

The Chilean Revolution matters because it poses fundamental questions for socialists: can capitalism be transformed through the existing state, or must working-class power break with it from below? What happens when workers begin to take control of their workplaces? And how does the capitalist class respond when threatened?

Join us to debate and discuss the lessons of Chile as a vital part of understanding the struggle for socialism today.

📚BOOK LAUNCH: ‘FROM REVOLUTIONARY HOPES TO SHATTERED DREAMS’

What did the Russian Revolution mean for the Australian socialist movement? In the years following World War I, Australian socialists were inspired by the possibility of revolution and drawn into strikes, class conflicts, and ideological debates over the future of the movement.

At Socialism Adelaide 2026, join author and Brisbane-based socialist Duncan Hart for the launch of ‘From Revolutionary Hopes to Shattered Dreams: The Socialist Movement in Australia, 1918-1925’. This new book brings to life one of the most turbulent and radical periods in Australian political history, drawing out lessons for the present.

Come along to hear Duncan introduce the book and grab your copy!

Session Highlight: Masters of the Universe: Understanding the Capitalist Class 💰

Elon Musk, Gina Rinehart, Jeff Bezos, banks, corporations and media moguls: who actually runs society?

This session digs into the capitalist class: the tiny minority who own and control enormous wealth, shape government policy and dictate the priorities of the economy. Understanding how the ruling class maintains its power is essential for understanding how we can challenge it. If workers create the wealth, why shouldn’t workers have the power to decide how society is run?

Session Highlight: Combating the Threat of One Nation in Australia Today ❌

The rise of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation is a sharp reminder that Australia is not immune from the global growth of the far-right. Once on the margins, its racist and nationalist politics have been normalised by the political mainstream. The politics of reformism and small-l liberalism are incapable of stopping Hanson. This session will unpack the conditions behind One Nation’s rising support and make the case for why socialist politics is needed to challenge it.
