Just because you can, doesn't mean you should!

Fire restrictions in the Mt Lofty Ranges ends at midnight tonight (Wednesday).

From Thursday, there are no CFS restrictions on burning in the open.

However, if you are ready to undertake a burn off, think carefully before you light up.

The lack of rainfall means the vegetation is extremely dry - don't be fooled by the cooler conditions or the light drizzle that keeps teasing us - it won't take much for a fire to go where you may not want it to go.

Before you light your burn, consider the following:

Check the weather forecast, particularly for wind

Ensure you have sufficient water on hand

Ensure enough people are present on site from time of ignition to extinguishment

Advise your neighbours

Don't try and burn more area than you can control with the people and equipment available

If burning land area, avoid lighting up from the bottom of a hill and 'let it rip' (A good way to for your fire to spread beyond your control)

Be mindful of embers - vegetation is very dry, and embers from the main fire (even if small) may travel and set fire to nearby vegetation.

If your fire escapes (or you are concerned it might) call 000 early - a smaller fire is much easier to deal with than a big one!

Above all, be safe with your burning.

Yesterday we celebrated and remembered the life of Brian Hannaford, a Summertown EFS/CFS member for over 50 years. To support the family and Brian's wishes for the funeral, the brigade was able to give Brian one last ride on the old Summertown Blitz firetruck as well as a guard of honour. The service was attended by many CFS members past and present from his Summertown brigade, East Torrens group and across the Region.

Thanks to SA CFS Promotions Unit for the photos.

Summertown & Districts CFS Brigade member Jordan Shinnick was recently presented with the National Emergency Medal by the Governer General. He is one of the first of our brigade to be presented, with further awards to be issued in coming months. He also had the honour of being interviewed as part of Nine News coverage.
Congratulations Jordan on the recognition.
