โจ BABY DAYTIME SLEEP CYCLE CHART โจ
We all know that babies need naps, however sometimes the importance of these day sleeps isn't stressed enough, nor is it emphasised how it can affect your baby's development and behaviour if they are not getting enough sleep at the most beneficial times.
It all comes down to the length and timing of your baby's naps and this is all very age-specific. The way your baby sleeps during their daytime cycles (see the chart below) is crucial to understanding how their napping affects their development.
Right from newborn up until around 2.5-3 years of age, we believe it is vital to establish and maintain a long restorative nap of approximately 2 hours across the middle of the day when there is a natural dip in energy levels. (Obviously, age-dependent, your baby will be having other naps on either side of this lunchtime sleep).
Our reason for aiming for this long consistent nap is that during restorative sleep, babies enter REM and this is where a whole lot of amazing stuff happens! Including - the regulation of their appetite and emotions, reduction of stress and cortisol levels, the consolidation of new skills and memories, their immune system is boosted, brain connections are made and strengthened.
This chart shows how a baby's daytime sleep cycle works. Save it to your phone and tag your mama friends. โค๏ธ

๐ Sleep Regressionsโeverything you need to know! ๐
Babies go through several massive periods in the first 2 years, where they experience mental and physiological change. You may find that your little one has gone from being a top napper to night-waking and non-existent naps.
This is what is known as a sleep regression.
There are a number of distinct regressions that most babies and toddlers experience, such as:
๐ 8 WeeksโBabies can be more unsettled, hard to get to sleep and start catnapping - having a very dark room and extending your baby's awake time between naps will help.
๐ 4 Monthsโ This is a big, permanent change in your baby's sleep patterns. They can start catnapping & have more night waking. Self-settling becomes important from now onwards, so your baby can learn how to move away from newborn sleep patterns.
๐ 8 Monthsโ This regression is associated with developmental leaps - crawling, standing, language. Sleep can be disrupted but it shouldn't last too long as long as no new sleep habits creep in.
๐ 12-15 Monthsโ This regression occurs as babies go through the big transition to one nap. The regression is more noticeable and lasts longer for babies who have a long morning sleep, because the nap transition is harder for them
๐ 2 Yearsโ At this age, your bubs is now a toddler and with that comes independence as theyโre going through some developmental milestones that can negatively impact their sleep, like separation anxiety. Again, this regression will pass, but you have to remain strong with your sleep schedule.
