South Australia's shame. One inhumane industry feeding another. Thank you Victorian Kangaroo Alliance for sharing this new report.
"3.4 The Domestic Market: Killing Kangaroos to Feed Greyhounds
Research conducted for this report has identified a significant, previously unexamined outlet
absorbing the surplus of a collapsing industry - Australia’s greyhound racing industry. As
the international skins and meat markets that once sustained the kangaroo industry have
contracted or are on the verge of total elimination, kangaroo meat has become a cheap,
high-volume feed source for Australian racing greyhounds, tying two industries widely
regarded as inherently cruel and inhumane directly together. Society does not generally
accept the large-scale commercial killing of wild animals to feed companion animals on this
scale; it is harder still to justify killing wild animals specifically to feed dogs bred and raced
for gambling.
The connecting figure between the two industries is Ray Borda, managing director of Macro
Group Australia, a company that controls the country’s largest retail distribution of kangaroo
meat and supplies Australian supermarkets and major export markets. Borda also serves as
national president of the Australian Wild Game Industry Council (AWGIC), the peak body
representing the kangaroo industry. Borda has been involved in greyhound racing for four
decades and has, at various points, owned as many as 1,400 greyhounds, with around 300
actively racing as of 2026 under the “Aston” prefix used for his breeding operation. Borda
has, according to sources, harvested profits totaling $18 million from his greyhound racing.
The Macro Group markets kangaroo mince explicitly as high-performance bulk feed for
Australia’s racing greyhounds. One arm of Borda’s kangaroo meat business, Fresh Pet Food
Co, sponsors the Greyhound Adoption Program and greyhound races in South Australia,
and is located on the same Athol Park site as Macro Group Australia. These multiple roles,
as a kangaroo industry consultant, the largest kangaroo meat exporter, a major greyhound
owner/racer, and a meat supplier to that same industry, present direct conflicts of interest
that, to date, appear to have gone unexamined by regulators in either industry."
