Celebrating Student Entrepreneurship

We’re proud to celebrate the creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of Toko, one of our international students, who has turned her passion for Australian wildlife and conservation into her own small business venture!

Toko creates beautiful, hand-drawn illustrations featuring Australian birds and wildlife, which she has turned into postcards and keychains.

What makes her initiative particularly meaningful is that 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Willunga Environment Centre, supporting local environmental education and conservation efforts.

Through her artwork, Toko hopes to encourage others to appreciate and protect the wildlife around us, while making a positive contribution to her local community.

It’s wonderful to see international students using their talents and passions to make a difference beyond the classroom.

Congratulations, Toko, on this fantastic initiative!

🌿 From volunteering to camping under the stars

This week a bunch of our international students packed a lot into their South Australian adventure. They started off with volunteering at Monarto Safari Park and helping clear stinging nettles from the rock-wallaby enclosure. With gloves and buckets in hand, they got stuck into the job. And judging by the number of buckets in that group photo, they certainly didn’t hold back!👏

After a guided tour of the park seeing number of animals in their natural habitat, the group headed to Arbury Park for an overnight camp. Fish and chips, card games, a movie and a campfire made for a pretty good evening. Plus some very popular marshmallows.

As Yuki, our international student from Japan reflected, “This camp was a wonderful experience, both for the opportunity to immerse myself in nature and to connect with people from all around the world. The camp staff were amazing and helped us build a sense of community and break down barriers. The food was great, and it was amazing being in the natural surroundings.”

The night ended with the unmistakable sound of banjo frogs 🐸, while the early risers enjoyed a beautiful morning walk.

This is one of the many ways South Australian Government Schools supports student wellbeing during the school holidays. Our care expands beyond academic success and homestay support, to ensure a fun and wholesome experience for our students.

Part of the international student experience is finding a healthy balance between study, life and new experiences.

This week, 23 of our international students set off on an incredible journey to Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park in the Northern Territory, organised by South Australian Government Schools.

Over 22 hours on the road, the landscape changed from canola and wheat fields to saltbush, low scrub, gibber plains and, finally the red dirt of the outback. Thanks to the winter rains, wildflowers added patches of purple, yellow and red to the landscape.🌾🌸

Along the way in Coober Pedy, students experienced staying underground and got a taste of life in the outback, quickly discovering that 5-min showers can be a way of life in remote parts of Australia.

As we head into the final term of the school year, we want to celebrate the hard work of all our students, give them the opportunity to explore somewhere new and connect with others as part of a well-rounded international student experience in Australia.

🌊🐋 Exploring Victor Harbor

This week our primary and secondary international students headed to Victor Harbor during the Term 3 school holidays for a day of walking, learning and exploring.

The day included a walk across Granite Island, followed by a guided educational tour at The Whale Centre, where students learned more about whales and South Australia’s marine environment.

There was also time to explore the historic beachside town of Victor Harbor and enjoy lunch together.

It was a simple but lovely way to spend a day outdoors, discover somewhere new and connect with other students outside the classroom.

📸 Here are some glimpses from the day!

Have you explored Victor Harbor before? Let us know what’s your favourite thing to see or do there in the comments👇

Exploring Indigenous Art and Culture 🎨

International students recently came together for a creative painting workshop at Adelaide High School.

The session introduced students to Indigenous Australian art, history and artistic traditions.

Students explored different techniques, practised their English and created their own unique artworks inspired by their experiences and perspectives.

From an Adelaide sunset to the connection between Australia and Japan, each artwork reflected the students' individual creativity and experiences during their time in South Australia.

It was wonderful to see students sharing ideas, expressing themselves and building connections through creativity.

Flinders Ranges Adventure🏕️

During the Term 2 Holidays, international students enjoyed a three-day camp in the stunning Flinders Ranges.

Based at the Napperby Scout Campsite, students enjoyed bushwalking, sightseeing and campfires while exploring the region's unique landscapes, including Alligator Gorge and Napperby Gorge.

Beyond the adventure, students developed independence, resilience and teamwork by taking an active role in camp life, including preparing meals, cooking and cleaning. These shared responsibilities encouraged cooperation and helped strengthen friendships and connections within the group.

The camp provided a wonderful opportunity for students to step outside their usual school and homestay environments, experience South Australia's natural environment and create lasting memories with fellow international students. 🌏

Student Volunteering at Adelaide Zoo 🦁

International students took part in a rewarding volunteering experience at Adelaide Zoo, combining hands-on activities with an opportunity to learn more about animal care and conservation.

Students enjoyed a personalised tour of the zoo, including behind-the-scenes access to animal care areas and food preparation facilities. They also supported zoo staff by cleaning bird quarantine areas and participated in a phasmid egg identification activity, learning more about these fascinating insects and the zoo's conservation work. 🐛

The students represented their schools exceptionally well, showing enthusiasm, curiosity and a willingness to get involved throughout the day. Their positive attitude and contribution were greatly appreciated by the zoo team.

A wonderful experience that gave students the opportunity to learn, contribute and gain a greater appreciation for the work involved in caring for animals and supporting conservation. 🌏

🌏 Welcome to South Australia!

On Friday 14 August, IES welcomed newly arrived international students from South Australian Government Schools at the Term 3 International Student Welcome and Induction.

The day was a great opportunity to meet other international students, learn more about life in South Australia and connect with organisations supporting students throughout their study journey.

A special highlight was the attendance of the Hon Lucy Hood MP, Minister for Education, Training and Skills, who officially welcomed students to South Australia and South Australian Government Schools.

Students also explored interactive booths covering Australian culture, sport, health, safety and support services.

A big thank you to all the schools, staff, volunteers, partners and community organisations who helped make the day such a memorable experience! 💙

International Education Services (IES) recently hosted its annual Year 12 Transition Event, bringing together current Year 12 international students, alumni and community partners to help students prepare for their next chapter beyond school.

Designed to support students as they consider their future pathways, the event provided an opportunity to hear firsthand from former international students who have successfully transitioned to university, employment and life in South Australia. Alumni shared their experiences, offering practical insights into higher education, accommodation, visa considerations and building a life after secondary school.

Students also connected with representatives from StudyAdelaide, Scots Church Community Connections and Baptistcare Sa, who showcased the support services, volunteering opportunities and community programs available to international students.

The event created an open and supportive environment where students could ask questions, gain valuable advice and feel more confident about the decisions ahead. By connecting current students with alumni and community organisations, the event reinforced the importance of planning, resilience and community as students transition beyond Year 12.

IES extends its sincere thanks to our alumni, partner organisations and school staff whose support helped make the event another success!

We look forward to continuing to equip international students with the knowledge, confidence and connections they need for future success!
