Tonight I’m thinking of federal Victorian MP Helen Haines. A genuine and hard working advocate.

She is tonight fighting for life after being struck by a 4WD in an alleged attack near her electorate office. A man is in custody.

No motive has yet been established and police and other authorities are now investigating.

As Deputy Chair of Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians and as an MP, I’m increasingly concerned about the rise in threatening behaviour and language towards those serving in public office. This is a very worrying time.

I send all my love to Helen and her family, friends and community.

I hope we can all reflect on this moment and ensure we’re respectful to each other as we engage in democracy.

Tonight I moved a motion at our South Australian Labor Conference expressing our collective support for the people of Nepal following the devastating flood 💔

Badcoe is home to the largest Nepalese-Australian 🇳🇵 population in SA. We are very lucky they’ve chosen our neighbourhood to call home 🏡

While the TV cameras move on as the floodwaters settle, I want the many Nepalese people in Badcoe - and beyond - to know we haven’t forgotten.

We know the heartache remains and the challenge for Nepali people only grows as people remain bereaved, homeless, without clean water and food, and now unemployed.

And we know that sorrow and devastation is felt by their loved ones here in Adelaide.

To our Nepalese community - we are with you ❤️ now and for the years ahead.

I’m saddened to inform my community of the closure of Edge Early Learning at Plympton.

While some sites across Australia have been sold as part of an administration process, a buyer was not found for the Plympton centre.

I am here to help.
