Well done, Team SALC!

A big congratulations to our SALC team members who joined the wider Minda team for the City to Bay Fun Run this past Sunday!

Sumith took on the 12 km run, while Alexis, Daniel, Karen and Peter completed the 12 km walk.

A fantastic effort from everyone, and we’re very proud of the team for getting involved!

Well done to everyone who took part in this year’s City to Bay, getting active, coming together as a community and helping support some great causes along the way.

SALC Graduate Spotlight: Meet Alex!

Alex completed his Certificate III in Individual Support with the South Australian Learning Centre in early 2019 and has since built a fantastic career at Minda, working as a support worker across a range of roles.

Over the past couple of years, Alex has also played an important role here at SALC, helping us deliver Behaviour and Response Training. He has really shone as a trainer, sharing his experience, expertise and genuine passion for supporting people with disability with Minda staff.

Alex is now heading off on his next adventure, moving overseas with his family for an exciting new opportunity. He’ll certainly be missed!

Alex’s journey is a great example of just how far a qualification in Individual Support can take you, and the many different directions a career in disability support can go.

We recently caught up with Alex to hear about his journey from SALC student to support worker and trainer. We’ll be sharing his reel in the next couple of days, so keep your eyes peeled!

We’re proud to be part of this Adult Community Education (ACE) programme, delivered by our friends at Just Ground!

If you’re interested in gardening, growing your own food and developing practical skills, this 10 week course is a great opportunity to get involved.

As part of the training, we’ll be delivering the accredited unit AHCPGM209 – Prune shrubs and small trees, giving participants the chance to gain a nationally recognised unit of competency.

SALC Graduate Spotlight: Meet Basira!

Basira completed her CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support with SALC in 2023 as a school-based trainee while completing Year 12. Since then, she has been working as a Disability Support Worker at Minda.

Looking back, Basira says doing the traineeship gave her a pathway straight from school into the workforce.

"I think doing my traineeship was a really good choice, especially when I was in Year 12, because it put me on my feet straight after school."

She also remembers the support she received during her training.

"I just like how supportive the environment was. Anyone who is struggling, there were always options around it."

More than two years into her career, Basira says the relationships she has built and knowing she is making a difference are some of the most rewarding parts of the job.

"It feels even better knowing that you are there to help. I feel like I'm making a little bit of a difference. Even if it's not a lot, it still means something."

The experience has also encouraged Basira to think about further study and other career opportunities across the disability and health sectors.

Her advice to anyone thinking about following a similar pathway?

"I would say go for it. If you're an empathetic person, I think you can definitely do this job."
