The risk of fire in your home increases during the winter months.

You can take several steps to protect yourself, your family and your home.

This includes checking appliances that have been in storage, following manufacturers' instructions and keeping flammable items such as clothing away well from heaters and fireplaces.

The most important step you can take is ensuring you are compliant with smoke alarm legislation that comes into effect from January 1, 2027.

All homes must be fitted with interconnected smoke alarms. That means when one alarm goes off, they all go off.

Today, June 1, is Smoke Alarm Action Day. It's the perfect opportunity to inspect your alarms and ensure they are compliant.

Queensland Fire and Rescue firefighters showed Year 11 students at Mossman State High School exactly what happens at the site of a deadly crash.
QFR personnel led a road crash rescue scenario alongside emergency services, with the students themselves getting a chance to get up close and be part of the scenario.
The exercise has been running for more than a decade as part of National Road Safety Week.

Queensland Fire and Rescue crews have cleared the last of more than a dozen contamination sites at Cunnamulla following a chemical spill.
Several homes, businesses and public buildings were contaminated during the incident last Monday.
What followed was a massive, ‘round the clock effort from Fire and Rescue firefighters and scientific officers to isolate, test and clean up the various contamination sites, which included the local school and hospital emergency waiting room.
With all sites now safe to re-enter, it’s back to business as usual in Cunnamulla.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident will be led by Queensland Police Service alongside Paroo Shire Council.
QFR crews are grateful for the patience and cooporation of the Cunnamulla community over the past week.

Queensland Fire and Rescue crews are continuing their response to a liquid mercury spill in Cunnamulla.
Following a reported spill across multiple homes, businesses and public buildings on Monday afternoon, QFR crews have worked night and day to isolate contamination areas, conduct testing and safely remove the contamination where required.
So far crews have been able to clear three homes, the school and the hospital ED waiting room for people to safely return.
Now entering their fifth day, operations will focus on testing and clearing a further five homes suspected of being contaminated, plus a local business, Paroo Council Depot and the local refuse tip.
It is likely these operations will continue well into the weekend.
