Today marks the end of National Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day, an important day in Australia's history that recognises the landmark Mabo Decision and the lasting legacy of Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo.
On 3 June 1992, the High Court of Australia overturned the legal concept of terra nullius and recognised that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights to their traditional lands that existed long before British settlement.
The Mabo Decision was a significant step towards recognising the unique connection that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with Country and paved the way for the Native Title Act 1993.
Mabo Day provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn more about this important chapter in our nation's history, reflect on the ongoing journey towards reconciliation, and recognise the enduring cultures, knowledge and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

🚨 Today is Smoke Alarm Action Day 🚨
Did you know that only working smoke alarms save lives?
Murrindindi Shire Council is supporting CFA and fire agencies across Australia in encouraging everyone to take a few minutes today to check their smoke alarms and make sure they are working properly.
✅ Test your smoke alarms
✅ Replace batteries if needed
✅ Check the expiry date
✅ Make sure alarms are installed in the right locations throughout your home
A working smoke alarm provides an early warning in the event of a fire and could save the lives of you and your family.
Watch CFA's Smoke Alarm Action Day video below and learn more about how to keep your household safe.

Look out for wildlife on our roads this winter 🦘🦔🦌
🌑 Shorter days in winter mean more wildlife activity at dusk and dawn. Collisions with kangaroos, wallabies, deer, and wombats can cause serious damage and injury. Please drive to the conditions and stay alert for animal movement. 👀🚗
🛑 If a collision with wildlife is unavoidable, brake firmly and remain in your lane, swerving can be even more dangerous. Let’s work together to reduce roadkill and keep our community safe this winter. ❄️
