☀️ Spring is in the air and we're excited to announce our Seed Library is relaunching!

🥬 Based at Altona Library, the Seed Library let you borrow seeds with the understanding that other seeds will be returned to ensure sustainable supply.

How does it work?
1. Sign up as a Seed Library member. This is a separate account to your regular one.
2. Borrow a packet of seeds. You can borrow one seed packet per month. The more seeds you donate, the more you can borrow.
3. Plant and enjoy! Ensure you plant enough to let some plants go to seed.
4. Replace a seed packet. Package your returned seeds in the envelopes provided.

We look forward to seeing what you'll grow.

🦇 Bats get a bad reputation but did you know bats play a vital role in our local ecosystems? Unfortunately, they face many threats including entanglement in fruit nets in gardens.

🦇 Presented by Tamsyn from 'They Fly by Night Bat Clinic', this talk explores the grey-headed flying foxes seen across Melbourne's west, including their connection to important camps such as Brimbank Park, alongside the microbats that share our urban environment.

As part of the event, you are also welcome to bring along your old or non-compliant fruit netting to swap it with a compliant fruit net. To help as many households as possible, just one free wildlife-safe replacement net will be provided per person. Please indicate your net size to help with stock levels.

☁️ Celebrate the remarkable birdlife of Hobsons Bay and explore how we can work together to protect local bird populations from the growing threat of H5N1 avian influenza (bird flu) with this special event.

🦤 'The wonder of birds: advocating for Hobsons Bay’s birds' with Sean Dooley
⌚ 10.30am to 11.30am
Award-winning author and bird enthusiast Sean Dooley will be joining us to introduce the audience to the rich coastal and migratory birdlife of Hobsons Bay and share practical ways community members can help protect and conserve local bird populations.

🦤 'Nature journaling with taxidermied birds: workshop with Dr. Kathleen Bagot'
⌚ 12.30pm to 2.30pm
Join Kathleen Bagot from 'Nothing Like Nature' for a guided nature journaling. Closely observe and sketch taxidermied bird specimens, while reflecting on the importance of bird conservation, the threat of the H5N1 bird flu, and community action workshop inspired by the birds of Hobsons Bay.

Each participant will receive and take home an A5 watercolour journal and a set of watercolour pencils.

Please book into your preferred session/s.

🎋 Doreen was a local resident whose childhood journal of pressed wildflowers has become an important record of the grasslands species that once grew in the area.

Presented by Susie Inglis from NatureWest, she will talk about Doreen’s life, how the journal came into her care, and what it tells us about the biodiversity of these grasslands.

Andrew Webster, Senior Conservation Ranger with Hobsons Bay City Council, will discuss the work being done to restore Doreen’s Grassland today.

Doreen’s Grassland is a special patch of remnant native grassland in Hobsons Bay and a reminder of the rich natural environment that once covered much of Melbourne’s west.
