Appin Rural Fire Brigade Appin Rural Fire Brigade was established in 1944. Within Southern Highlands, NSW Rural Fire Service. Appin Rural Fire Brigade is located in King Street, Appin.

We are one of the busiest brigades in the Wollondilly Shire, attending an average of 100 calls per year. We have a Category 1 Heavy Bushfire Tanker and a Cat 10 Urban Pumper.

When fire impacted the community of Koolewong on the NSW Central Coast in December of 2025 it moved so quickly that people only had minutes to make life saving decisions.

Residents Elise, Paul and Chui Yin were all in their homes that day and reflect on the decisions they made and the actions they took as the fire impacted their community.

Their experiences provide valuable insights into the importance of understanding your risk and knowing what you will do when fire threatens.

We'll have static displays, area risk maps, fire plan packs, and plenty of firefighters on hand to provide guidance on planning and preparation ahead of the bushfire danger period.

⚠️ Increased Wind Forecast ⚠️

Winds are forecast to increase across the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas today and into tomorrow, with peak gusts expected to exceed 50km/hr tomorrow, combined with warmer temperatures.

These conditions increase the risk of recent pile burns reigniting and escaping, particularly burns conducted over the past few weeks.

🔥 Landholders are urged to:
• Postpone all planned pile burning until conditions ease.
• Regularly check any pile burns conducted in recent weeks.
• Ensure burnt piles are completely extinguished, including checking for heat or smouldering material beneath the surface.
• Continue monitoring old burn sites while strong winds persist.

Remember, fines can apply if you fail to notify the RFS before lighting a fire or if your fire escapes your property.

If you see an unattended fire, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

Bush Fire Danger Period to start on 14 September 2026

The Bush Fire Danger Period of the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council areas has been brought forward to 14 September due to prevailing dry conditions. This means that a Fire Permit will be required from 14 September to light or maintain fire in the open.

Residents and land holders should also ensure they understand the rules around the use of fire. Along with required fire permits, you must also notify your local fire authority and neighbours of your intent to burn 24 hours in advance.

To apply for a Fire Permit visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify and be sure to give us as much notice as possible as a Fire Permit Officer will need to visit your property prior to issuing a permit.

Know the risks for your area, have a bush fire survival plan and discuss what you and your family will do if threatened by fire.

At our recent AGM, we were proud to celebrate the outstanding service and dedication of our firefighters. On the night, several members were presented with Premiers Citations in recognition of their efforts during the 2022/2023 flood events.

We also extend our warmest congratulations to Paul Hughes, who received the National Medal for Service, a prestigious acknowledgment of his long-standing commitment to the community.

In addition, we congratulate Timothy Moss on his election to the role of Senior Deputy Captain of the brigade.

A huge thank you to all award recipients for their service, and best wishes to Tim in his new leadership role. 👏

SMOKE ADVISORY - NSWRFS and WaterNSW are undertaking a hazard reduction burn west of Helensburgh in Water Catchment area.

Given proximity to Appin, we are seeing a significant amount of smoke drifting into the area driven by an easterly breeze. The smoke is expected to clear overnight as the winds shift before returning again on Thursday afternoon.

To stay up to date on nearby Hazard Reduction activities, download the Hazards Near Me app and set up a watch zone for your property.

Only call Triple Zero (000) if you see unattended fire, not if you see or smell smoke.

The Official Bush Fire Danger Period will conclude at midnight tomorrow (31 March 2026) for the Wingecarribee Shire Council and Wollondilly Shire Council LGA's.

From Wednesday 1 April, fire permits will no longer be required for residents, except those properties within the town limits of Warragamba, Picton, Mittagong, Moss Vale, Bowral and Bundanoon, who are required to obtain a fire permit from Fire & Rescue NSW all year round.

Even though a fire permit is no longer required, you must still notify your neighbours and the local fire authority 24 hours before burning as well as comply with any Council Backyard Burning Policies.

Before lighting up, you should also check the forecast weather conditions and have sufficient equipment on hand to control and contain the fire to your own property. Failure to notify neighbours or the RFS, or allowing a fire to escape can result in significant fines.

To notify of your intent to burn, use the online burn notification tool at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/notify or call your local Fire Control Centre during business hours.
