📚 An overview of the different types of schools in Ararat Rural City
Another important aspect of resettlement is getting a good overview of the different types of school in the region.
Ararat Rural City is home 10 primary and 3 secondary schools across public and catholic sectors. The major high schools include Ararat College, Marian College and Lake Bolac P-12 College.
We spoke with a local teacher from Ararat College and Ararat West Primary School to help give parents a good understanding of the schools and support available for families with language barriers.

🏥 Spotlight on Ararat Rural City Healthcare services
Ararat is one of the largest townships in the region and boasts all the lifestyle necessities required for comfortable country living.
One of the things to consider before relocating is access to basic services such as healthcare. East Grampians Health Service is a local health service, with two campuses in Ararat and Willaura, that provides an extensive range of allied health and community-based services. Another clinic is the Ararat Medical Centre, located in the CBD.
Ararat Rural City Council also provides a free Maternal and Child Health service for families with babies and children aged from birth to 4 years, through the East Grampians Community Health Service.

Ararat Community Gardens – The Sugar Cane Competition
The Ararat Community Garden has recently become a meeting space for new settlers to Ararat.
Community gardens have been successfully established in other rural Victorian localities for people from the communities of Burma such as in Nhill, and our new settlers are hoping to match their success in Ararat.
Establishing sugar cane has been part of the venture as well as connecting to a supportive local community group.
As noted by Project Co-ordinator Koyeh Talor, “We thought that sugar cane could only grow in a sub-tropical or tropical area but upon our visit to Nhill, we discovered they were able to grow sugar cane in their community garden which is fascinating given the climate. Sugar cane brings back many childhood memories when seeing them in the garden and planting is the best way to reconnect.”

New Settlement Program – Ararat Rural City Council and Wyndham Community Education Centre
Over the last 12 months, Council has been working in partnership with Wyndham Community Education Centre in attracting new settlers to the municipality, particularly the Karen who originate from the communities of Burma.
The Karen have successfully transitioned and set up new lives in towns such as Nhill, Bendigo, Geelong and Werribee.
The New Settlement Program has to date attracted 14 new settlers, most of whom are working and living in Ararat. We are aiming for culturally safe settlement, reaching out to community, business and faith-based organisations to help in the transition to a new way of living and working in rural Victoria.
