We are so very happy that others love the river and our cruise as much as we do. Thank you for your beautiful words.
Some experiences just stay with you. Today will definitely be one of those moments that will be stamped in my memory forever.
There are places in Tasmania that remind you just how wonderfully wild this little island of ours really is. Places where the wilderness still feels untamed, where the river runs dark as freshly brewed tea, and where, if you’re fortunate enough, nature allows you a fleeting glimpse into its extraordinary wild world.
Today, I found myself aboard the MV George Robinson, affectionately known as The Red Boat, cruising the magnificent Arthur River and into the ancient wilderness of the Tarkine.
And goodness me, what an experience.
With skipper Emma at the helm and her dad Boris, sharing an incredible wealth of local knowledge, stories and history, this was so much more than a leisurely cruise along the river. There is something genuinely special about being guided through a place by people who know its stories and are so willing to share them. Their warmth, humour and passion for this remarkable corner of Tasmania made the entire experience feel wonderfully personal.
We drifted through those beautiful, tannin-stained waters, surrounded by towering forests and the kind of untouched wilderness that makes you forget the rest of the world exists.
And then came the sea eagles.
Oh, the sea eagles.
Watching these magnificent white bellied sea eagles descend from the sky, their enormous wings stretched against the dark backdrop of the river, was nothing short of breathtaking.
The sudden rush of wings. The splash of water. The sheer power and grace of a wild creature doing what nature intended. Right there infront of me.
For a few glorious moments, the rest of the world simply disappeared and seemed inconsequential.
I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am that I brought my camera along. I’ve photographed some extraordinary things over the years, but watching those eagles through my viewfinder will remain one of the absolute highlights of my entire West Coast adventure.
And this photograph? I think it might just be one of my favourites. Ever.
As though the river and its magnificent inhabitants weren’t enough, we stopped at Turk’s Landing for a wander through the rainforest and a delicious BBQ lunch. Good food, wonderful company, fascinating stories and the ancient forest all around us. The sort of simple, unhurried experience that feels increasingly rare in our busy world.
I came to the West Coast looking for a little peace, a little adventure and an opportunity to reconnect with the things that make my soul feel alive.
I certainly found them.
To Emma and Boris, thank you for sharing your beautiful part of the world with such generosity, knowledge and genuine enthusiasm. What you offer aboard the Red Boat is something really special, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have experienced it.
If you’re ever wandering Tasmania’s wild West Coast, please, do yourself a favour and spend a day on the Arthur River. Take your camera, bring your curiosity, listen to the stories and allow yourself to be completely captivated.
Some places are worth visiting. Others become part of you.
Arthur River, you’ve certainly left your mark on me.
I’ll share a few of my favourite photographs from today, starting with this one. I still can’t quite believe I captured this moment. 📷
