Each day, up to 18 dedicated volunteers help prepare and deliver meals to those in our community.
Every single one of them plays a vital role in helping us provide More Than Just a Meal — offering not only nourishment, but also care, connection, and a friendly face at the door.
This month and next, these wonderful people are celebrating their volunteering anniversary with Ashgrove Meals on Wheels - thank you for being part of the AMoW family 💙

In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, we’d like to continue recognising some of our incredible volunteers.
Today’s story is a little different from the ones we’ve shared earlier this week. It’s the story of a past volunteer whose dedication helped shape Ashgrove Meals on Wheels from the very beginning.
Frank’s journey with Ashgrove Meals on Wheels has spanned almost 55 years. He was one of a small group of local community members who formed our original committee in 1971, later serving as Committee President from 1974 to 1982. Even after his presidency, Frank remained on the Management Committee until 1992.
Both Frank and his late wife Margaret shared a long and meaningful connection with our organisation. Frank organised fundraising raffles and helped set up stalls before heading off to work each day, while Margaret was part of the sewing group whose handmade cushions became a remarkably successful fundraising initiative.
Together, the dedication and hard work of volunteers like Frank and Margaret helped raise the funds needed to build the premises from which Ashgrove Meals on Wheels still operates today.
Now a valued client of our service, Frank’s Meals on Wheels journey has almost come full circle. Over the decades, he has seen our organisation evolve from delivering hot meals out of car boots in the 1970s to offering today’s wide range of high-quality meals, salads, sandwiches, soups, desserts and more.
Pictured here celebrating his 93rd birthday last week, we would like to wish Frank a very happy birthday — and sincerely thank him for the incredible contribution he made in helping found Ashgrove Meals on Wheels.

National Volunteer Week celebrations continued… 💙
Meals on Wheels has been part of the lives of many of our incredible volunteers for decades — and Amanda is just one wonderful example.
“Early memories of accompanying my mum on Meals on Wheels runs in Adelaide back in the 1960s, and seeing the sign outside Meals on Wheels Ashgrove from the window of the bus every afternoon planted the seed that ‘one day’ I’d volunteer too.
That day came in 2021, and since then I’ve volunteered in the kitchen, as a delivery driver, and for the last few years as a Committee member,” explains Amanda.
Not only does Amanda deliver meals and contribute to organisational decision-making as a Committee member, but since 2025 she has also produced our client newsletter, playing a vital role in ensuring our service continues to operate smoothly and sustainably for the community we serve.
We are so grateful for our volunteers. Every day, up to 18 dedicated volunteers help prepare and deliver meals across our community. They generously use their own vehicles and cover their own fuel costs — a commitment that is especially meaningful during the current cost of living pressures.

Meet the staff and volunteers who make Meals on Wheels go round
For 70 years, Meals on Wheels has been serving Ipswich residents, and every meal comes with a welfare check and a conversation.

Year 11 student Evie is a wonderful example of multi-generational volunteering here at Ashgrove Meals on Wheels 💙
For the past two years, Evie’s mum and grandad, Scott, have been volunteering as meal delivery drivers, with Evie often joining them during school holidays.
Over the last year, Evie and her schoolmate Ivy have also been helping deliver meals as part of the Hillbrook Anglican School Community Action Program (CAP), where students complete 20 hours of volunteering to support the wider community.
“Even after our 20 hours, we’d still love to continue! It’s been a great experience.” – say Evie and Ivy.
We’re certain our clients would love that too! 😊

We'd like to take the opportunity to say thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers, as part of National Volunteer Week 💛
Each day, up to 18 dedicated volunteers give their time to prepare and deliver meals—and Kasia is one of these amazing people!
Kasia, a 36-year-old full-time geoscientist, has been fitting meal deliveries into her busy schedule for the past 2.5 years. She says, “I think it’s everyone’s duty to give back to the community and help others, if they’re in the position to do so. I enjoy the small chats with clients and puppy pats! Plus, I get to meet lovely people, both clients and Meals on Wheels staff.”
We’re so grateful for volunteers like Kasia who make such a meaningful difference in our community.

To continue our National Volunteer Week shoutouts, we'd like to introduce you to Lynda, she has been delivering meals to our wonderful clients for about a year.
After retiring, Lynda chose to volunteer as a way of giving back to Meals on Wheels, who were such a great support to her father after her mother passed away. Her kindness and commitment truly embody the spirit of our service.
“My favourite part of delivering meals is seeing my clients each week. Having a chat to them and in a small way ensuring they are doing well and checking on them is very beneficial for me, and I hope for them. Volunteering brings me a lot of pleasure.” - says Lynda.
Each day, up to 18 dedicated volunteers help prepare and deliver meals to those in our community. Every single one of them plays a vital role in helping us provide More Than Just a Meal — offering not only nourishment, but also care, connection, and a friendly face at the door.

It’s National Volunteer Week, and we’d love to recognise some of the incredible people who help us deliver More Than Just a Meal 💛
Last week, our team took a well-deserved break to celebrate Rob’s 60th birthday! 🎉
Rob does an incredible job helping prepare meals for our clients, keeping our kitchen sparkling clean, and stepping in wherever needed — so we wanted to make sure he received the same care and attention he gives to others every day.
Our connection with Rob began back in 2012, when he joined us as our second Chef for around seven years. After retiring from his hospitality career in the healthcare sector, Rob returned to Ashgrove Meals on Wheels as a volunteer a few days each week — and we’re so grateful he did.
“I enjoy working, the social aspect of volunteering and the chats!” says Rob 😊
In recent weeks, Rob has gone above and beyond in the kitchen while Chef Anne recovers from a fractured ankle, and we truly can’t thank him enough for his support, dedication, and kindness.
Happy 60th birthday, Rob — and thank you for everything you do! 💙
