Anti-Poverty Week: Roadmap to Reform

Poverty can happen to anyone.

Research shows that more than 1 in 7 Australians live below the poverty line, with women, children, sole parents, renters, people with disability and First Nations communities disproportionately affected.

At Allied Justice, we believe access to justice is critical to addressing disadvantage. When people face family violence, housing stress, discrimination, employment issues or financial hardship, timely support can help prevent problems from escalating.

During Anti-Poverty Week, we acknowledge the challenges many people in our communities face and reaffirm our commitment to ensuring everyone can access information, advocacy and support when they need it most.

Together, we can help build a more equitable Australia.

Angela Murphy from Allied Justice Horsham attended the Seniors Concert at the Horsham Church of Christ on Friday, where 230 local seniors enjoyed a wonderful Frank Sinatra concert led by Ian Stenlake. The toe-tapping performance celebrated Frank Sinatra's life and timeless music, with the audience singing along.

Allied Justice was pleased to host a stall alongside Ambulance Victoria, SES, Horsham Rural City Council, CFA, Hearing Australia and Catholiccare Carefinder, providing community members with information and resources.

Events like these are a great opportunity to connect with seniors in our community, share information about our services, and help people access support when needed.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by for a chat and picked up one of our information showbags. ๐Ÿ’™

Anti-Poverty Week: How Children See Living in Poverty

> I wish my family wasn't struggling anymore.

> My lunch box isn't always full. Sometimes I hear grown-ups talking about bills, rent, groceries and money when they think I'm not listening.

> I worry when my parents worry.

>I wish there wasn't so much stress about finding a house. I wish food didn't cost so much. I wish kids who need it could get free lunches at school.

Most of all, I wish my family didn't have to struggle with money anymore.
During Anti-Poverty Week, let's listen to what children living in poverty are telling us. They aren't asking for more toys or treats. They're asking for enough food, a safe home, less stress for their families, and the chance to be kids.

At Allied Justice, we believe every child deserves security, dignity and the opportunity to thrive. By working together to address poverty and disadvantage, we can help build a future where no child has to shoulder the burden of financial hardship.

๐Ÿ“…Anti-Poverty Week

This Anti-Poverty Week, weโ€™re standing with the millions of Australians facing financial hardship and advocating for a fairer future for all.

๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ More than 3.3 million Australians, including 761,000 children, live below the poverty line. Poverty isnโ€™t just a lack of income. It can mean skipping meals, struggling to afford housing, delaying medical care, and facing social isolation.

โš– At Allied Justice, we see firsthand how legal issues, housing insecurity, family violence, unemployment and rising living costs can push people into hardship. We also know that access to information, support and justice can make a real difference.

๐ŸคThis Anti-Poverty Week, letโ€™s challenge myths about poverty, listen to lived experiences, and work together to build communities where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Access to free legal help can be life-changing for people experiencing family and domestic violence.

When someone is living with violence, the challenges they face often extend far beyond their immediate safety. They may be dealing with urgent legal issues such as intervention orders, housing, finances, debt, employment, parenting arrangements and child safety. Access to free, independent legal support can help people understand their rights, make informed decisions and take steps towards a safer future.

Where a person lives should never determine whether they can access legal help. Yet across regional Victoria, demand for community legal services continues to outstrip available resources. Too often, people experiencing family violence face delays or are denied support altogether because services lack the funding needed to meet demand.

At Allied Justice, we see every day the difference early legal assistance can make. Timely support can help prevent problems from escalating and reduce the risk of housing insecurity, financial hardship and ongoing harm. It can also empower people to rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.

Community legal centres play a critical role in supporting victim-survivors of family violence, but they cannot continue to do more with less. Sustainable, long-term government funding is essential to ensure people can access the help they need, when they need it most. Proper investment in community legal services is an investment in safer individuals, stronger families and more resilient communities.
Everyone deserves access to justice, regardless of their postcode or financial situation.

You can help advocate for stronger funding for community legal services. Visit https://www.fclc.org.au/gotyourback and use the form to let your local MP know that community legal services need ongoing funding that reflects community needs.

๐Ÿ“ข On Tuesday, Allied Justice CEO Narelle Laing and Director of Integrated Services & Engagement Emily Nester attended the launch of the VCOSS 2026 Election Platform โ€“ Essentials for Everyone.

The campaign is built on a simple yet powerful vision: that every Victorian should have access to the essentials for a life of dignity, hope and opportunity, including safe housing, healthcare, food, education, decent work and a sense of belonging. The platform calls on all political parties to commit to practical solutions to address poverty, disadvantage and growing community need.

The event brought together community sector leaders and political representatives from across the Victorian Parliament, including a conversation with Victorian Premier Ben Carroll MP, Victorian Liberal Deputy Leader David Southwick MP, and Victorian Greens Leader Ellen Sandell MP. Attendees also heard from Georgie Purcell MP of the Animal Justice Party and Rachel Payne MP of the Legalise Cannabis Party, underscoring the importance of bipartisan and cross-party engagement on issues affecting Victorian communities.

Narelle emphasised that the event underscored the need to recognise the unique challenges faced by residents in regional Victoria. She also noted that government policies must address postcode inequities to truly represent all Victorians.

A panel discussion featuring respected researchers and policy experts Dr Stephane Shepherd, Dr Shelley Bowen and Amanda McKenzie explored what truly matters to Victorians and why access to life's essentials must remain central to public policy.

At Allied Justice, we see every day the challenges people face when affordable housing, financial security, access to services and community connection are out of reach. We are proud to support advocacy that works towards a fairer Victoria where everyone can access the support they need when they need it.

Narelle remarked that the event highlighted the social services sector's collective power to lobby and advocate for change.

๐ŸŒฆ๏ธ Community spirit shines at the Ballarat Mental Health Expo ๐Ÿ’š

Despite the rain, around 500 community members gathered at Lake Esmond on Thursday 1 October for the Ballarat Mental Health Collective's Mental Health Expo and Circle of Solidarity.

Allied Justice team members Eddie and Skye were in attendance, connecting with community members and fellow service providers throughout the day. The expo provided a fantastic opportunity for meaningful conversations, to share information about available supports, and to strengthen relationships across the community sector.

The family-friendly event offered a wide range of activities, live music, food, and opportunities for people of all ages to connect, learn, and access support. It was inspiring to see so many people braving the weather to support mental wellbeing, community connection, and inclusion.

A big thank you to the Ballarat Mental Health Collective and everyone involved in organising such a successful event. The strong turnout demonstrated how important events like these are for bringing communities together and helping people connect with the services and support they need.

At Allied Justice, we know that strong communities are built on connection, collaboration and support, and we were proud to be part of such a positive day.

๐Ÿ’š Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with Eddie and Skye. We look forward to continuing to support our community and to working alongside local services to help people access the assistance they need.

What a fantastic day connecting with the community at the St. Arnaud Show! ๐ŸŒพ๐ŸŽก

Our team member Angela represented Allied Justice at one of the region's favourite community events, sharing a stall with East Wimmera Health Service and meeting local residents, families, and community groups.

The show truly had something for everyone, with livestock, horse events, family rides, live entertainment, market stalls, children's activities and community displays that brought people together from across the region.

We also enjoyed connecting with fellow service providers and community organisations, including Grampians Community Health, Bendigo Bank, the Rotary Club, Connect St. Arnaud and the Northern Grampians Shire.

A big congratulations to the organisers and volunteers for delivering such a well-run event and creating a welcoming space for the whole community. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat and learn more about the support and services Allied Justice provides.

Preparing Together, Strengthening Our Community ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿก

Allied Justice was pleased to be part of the recent community preparedness event at Natimuk Showgrounds, alongside Council, Grampians Community Health, Wimmera Catchment Management Authority, Agriculture Victoria, SES, Ambulance Victoria, Victoria Police, CFA and the Arapiles Historical Society to help local residents prepare for and respond to emergencies.

With about 50 community members attending, the event provided practical information and advice on disaster preparedness, helping people better understand the steps they can take to protect themselves, their families, property and livelihoods in emergencies.

Our team enjoyed speaking with residents about the support and services available through Allied Justice and learning from fellow organisations committed to building safer, more resilient communities.

Community preparedness is a shared responsibility, and events like this play an important role in ensuring people have the knowledge, resources and connections they need before an emergency occurs.

A big thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions and contributed to the conversations throughout the day. Together, we're helping build stronger, more informed and more resilient communities.

๐Ÿ’™ Prepared communities are resilient communities.
