๐Ÿ’ง National Water Week is a great reminder that caring for our water starts well before it reaches our taps.

๐ŸŒณ Healthy catchments play an important role when providing drinking water, which is why Rous is working with landholders and partners through the Northern Rivers Watershed Initiative to trial ways of slowing water across the landscape and restoring natural catchment processes.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Explore our new StoryMap website to see natural flood management in action and how small-scale interventions can slow down and spread water across the landscape.

In December, our W**d Biosecurity team will be presenting at the LGNSW Environment Awards (Sydney), sharing details about the work they do to protect the Northern Rivers from priority w**ds.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Their presentation will focus on the teamโ€™s ongoing surveillance and monitoring of Miconia calvescens, a highly invasive plant that Rous is working to eradicate from the region.

๐Ÿ‘ The Miconia calvescens project has also been nominated for an LGNSW Environment Award. The project exemplifies how w**d biosecurity integrates targeted surveillance, rapid control, habitat mapping, landholder engagement and community education to detect and respond to this invasive plant.

๐Ÿ˜ Weโ€™re proud to have the team representing Rous in Sydney and wish them all the best for the awards. Local Government NSW

Our W**d Biosecurity Officers are working at Lennox Head to control Kei apple (Dovyalis caffra), a highly invasive plant that can outcompete native vegetation and form dense, thorny growth that restricts the movement of native animals.

๐Ÿ‘‰Officers have been cutting through layers of spiky branches to access the Kei apple before using the stem injection method to control them.

โŒ Kei apple can spread easily by seed, with seedlings often appearing beneath trees or other places where birds perch.

๐Ÿƒ Follow-up inspections will be carried out every three months to check for regrowth and make sure any new plants are managed early.

Our Bush Regeneration team has been conducting w**d inspections around Rocky Creek Dam, the Wilsonโ€™s River Source and Emigrant Creek Dam.

โœ… These regular checks help protect remnants of subtropical rainforest and areas that have undergone bush regeneration.

๐Ÿ’ง๐ŸŒณ This work forms part of Rousโ€™ long-term investment in the health of the regionโ€™s water catchments. By restoring native vegetation and establishing a diverse buffer zone, bush regeneration helps create a natural filter that can improve the quality of water flowing into the dam.

๐Ÿ‘ The teamโ€™s work is providing great results, with regenerating areas developing into healthier, more diverse ecosystems that provide habitat for native wildlife while helping protect our water supply.

Frogbit (Limnobium laevigatum) has been added to Biosecurity Queensland list of restricted invasive plants. โŒ

๐Ÿ‘‰ The invasive w**d is already prohibited in New South Wales.

๐Ÿƒ ๐Ÿธ Frogbit is a fast-growing aquatic plant that poses a serious threat to local ecosystems. Please report any sightings to Rous so it can be identified and managed appropriately.

It was great to meet so many locals and visitors at the Nimbin Show last weekend.

๐Ÿ™ Thank you to everyone who stopped by to chat with our W**d Biosecurity team.

๐Ÿƒ These conversations are a valuable opportunity to share practical advice about identifying w**ds, choosing effective control methods and protecting native vegetation through bush regeneration.

๐Ÿ‘ This Friday and Saturday we will also have a stall at the Kyogle Show. Then, on Sunday, the month-long Richmond Riverfest begins - an event that Rous is proud to support.

We hope to see you there!
