REMOTE AREA RESCUE SUCESS - KANAGRA BOYD

Over the weekend Bathurst and Oberon SES Units were activated to a remote area rescue for 4 bushwakers with a sustained injury whilst trekking deep in the Kanagra Boyd National park.

A multi agency rescue operation was formed with Rescue Operators from NSW SES, Bathurst Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit - Chifley Police District along with Special Operations Team paramedics from NSW Ambulance.

Ultising extensive local knowledge from Operators from NSW SES Oberon Unit at the command post, a multiagency walking party set off at 9am to reach the injured parties last given coordinates. Traversing thick vegetation and rough terrain the search team was able to locate the party around 1500 after establishing verbal communication with them in the bush.

After initial treatment by Paramedics the party was able to be assisted back out through the dense bushland, returning back to the control post around midnight.

This highlights the strong working relationships formed between emergency services personnel within our region.

The Lancers look forward to conducting realistic training within the Bathurst Region over the coming weekend.

⚠️ AusAlert is a new national warning system that uses the latest technology to send emergency messages to compatible mobile devices.

It will be ready to use in October 2026, but before it launches, we need to test the system across Australia.

‼️ On Monday 27 July, your mobile devices, such as mobile phones, tablets and smart watches, may receive a test alert.

The test times across Australian time zones are:
• 2:00 pm AEST (QLD, NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS)
• 1:30 pm ACST (SA, NT, Broken Hill NSW)
• 12:00 pm AWST (WA)

The message will vibrate and include a loud, siren-like sound that lasts about 10 seconds.
If this could disrupt you or cause you or a loved one to feel unsafe, please turn off your mobile devices or switch them to aeroplane mode before the scheduled test time in your location, and leave them off for at least one hour.

As this is just a test, you don’t need to do anything, but in an actual disaster you should follow the alert instructions to keep yourself and others safe.

Storm and Water Damage Operations training wrapped up, and Bathurst Unit has a fresh group of operators ready to go.

This course covers the core of what we do: pumps, sandbagging, hand tools, and height safety systems to access roofs for temporary repairs.

It's not glamorous work, but it's the bread and butter of storm and flood response. When a roof's been torn open or a property's taking on water, these are the skills that stop the damage from getting worse while permanent repairs are arranged.

Well done to everyone who put in the hours to get qualified. More trained operators means a faster, stronger response when Bathurst needs it.

Congratulations to Luke, Paul and Christine on their appointment to the rank of Operator with NSW SES Bathurst Unit.

Reaching Operator rank takes real commitment. It means hours of training, assessments and time given up to build the skills our community relies on when things get tough.

All three have put in the work, and it shows.Well done Luke, Paul and Christine. We're glad to have you at this level within the unit.

Training for Industrial and Domestic Rescue skills with a ring removal scenario is one of the trickier skills we maintain in this space.

It looks simple. A ring stuck on a swollen finger. But get the technique wrong and you risk further injury to the patient, so crews practice this regularly alongside our broader rescue capability.

Training like this keeps our skills current and our response ready, whether it's a ring, a piece of machinery, or something more complex.

This year's new member intake at Bathurst SES has hit a big milestone: Field Core Skills. It's the foundation course every volunteer works through before moving into specialist areas like road crash rescue or storm and water damage.

The course covers knot work, safe handling of tools and equipment, working safely around vehicles, and an introduction to acro props for shoring up damaged structures. It's hands-on, practical, and it sets the standard for everything that follows.

Thinking about volunteering? This is where it starts.

Rain didn't let up, but neither did our crews. Bathurst SES volunteers were out attending storm damage jobs including roof where wind and rain had done some damage.

Jobs like this aren't quick. Completing temporary repairs on a roof in the dark, in the rain, takes patience and a steady head. Our crews worked through it to get the job secure and the household safe until proper repairs can be made.

If your property's been damaged in the recent weather, call the SES on 132 500.
