Cancellations for people who fail to reconnect with employment services within four weeks are set to resume on October 26, more than two years after being paused.

“We are extremely alarmed by this announcement that will see the screws turned even tighter on welfare recipients who are already under so much strain,” said The Antipoverty Centre co-coordinator Jay Coonan.

Two subsequent reports by the Commonwealth Ombudsman exposed unlawful cancellations and failings in how affected people were compensated.

But welfare groups have accused the government of pushing ahead without detailing how it has fixed the identified failures.

“Last year, our own analysis revealed that roughly 310,000 people had had their payments cancelled illegally,” said Economic Justice Australia CEO Kate Allingham.

🏆 CONGRATULATIONS TO SENATOR DAVID SHOEBRIDGE, RECIPIENT OF THE 2026 AUSTRALIAN ABYSSINIAN OF THE YEAR AWARD! 🌟

Justice. Courage. Solidarity. Standing Up for Others.

Mission of Hope is proud to announce Senator David Shoebridge as the recipient of the 2026 Australian Abyssinian of the Year Award.

The Abyssinian Award draws inspiration from one of the earliest examples of interfaith solidarity in Islamic history, when a Christian ruler of Abyssinia, known as the Negus, offered protection to persecuted Muslims seeking refuge.

It honours the principle that justice transcends faith, ethnicity and background, recognising Australians who stand alongside Muslim communities, defend their rights and advocate for fairness and dignity.

Senator Shoebridge's public record includes advocacy on issues of particular significance to Australian Muslims, including:

✦ Challenging Islamophobia: Speaking against anti-Muslim prejudice and challenging discriminatory rhetoric in the Australian Parliament.

✦ Defending Civil Liberties: Advocating for human rights, freedom of expression and the right of communities to participate in public life without discrimination.

✦ Standing with Palestinian Communities: Supporting Palestinian human rights, calling for accountability over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and advocating for stronger Australian government action.

✦ Supporting Refugees and Vulnerable Families: Raising concerns about Australia's treatment of people seeking protection, including Palestinian families fleeing conflict.

✦ Community Solidarity: Engaging with Palestinian, Lebanese and other multicultural communities, and raising concerns about racism and political targeting.

At a time when Australian Muslims continue to confront Islamophobia, discrimination and challenges to their sense of belonging, public advocacy for equal rights and dignity carries particular significance.

The spirit of the Abyssinian Award is not about sharing the same faith. It is about recognising our shared humanity and the responsibility to uphold justice, particularly when others face discrimination or persecution.

👏 Congratulations, Senator David Shoebridge, on being named the 2026 Australian Abyssinian of the Year!

We look forward to recognising this award at the 2026 Australian Muslim Achievement Awards.

"The 30 years after the war were not the West’s natural condition. They were its exception. Our politics will stay broken until someone is prepared to say so and force an electorate to accept the new world, that has more in common with 1930 than the last 40 years."
