Council is in no way responsible for the views expressed and accuracy of information stated in public comments on its page. Council will manage its page, including responding to comments and the removal of unsuitable material, during normal business operating hours only. Our page is a place for constructive discussion about local issues. Positive and negative comments form the basis of constructive discussion, but like all online and offline public forums, there is a level of moderation needed to ensure fairness to other users and those who are featured on our page. Council workers aren't just staff. They're the people volunteering on local committees, dropping their kids at swimming lessons and making the most of everything the Bega Valley has to offer.

Our Information Technology Manager leads the teams responsible for Council's digital systems, technology and information management, helping keep services and systems running across the shire.

After growing up locally, she returned home to raise her family and now serves as President of the Tathra Preschool Committee, while her children enjoy many of Council's services, from swimming lessons to art classes.

Whether she's supporting her community, exploring nature with her family or spending time with Chappie the schnoodle, the Bega Valley is home.

We live here. We work here.

👉 Welcome to our Councillor Connect update

This week we feature Councillor Helen O'Neill.

Authorised by Councillor Helen O’Neil:

The risk of bushfire rises with the heat and wind each summer, so it’s time to Get Ready, before a risk becomes a threat. You can see the Get Ready message on the signs carried on every RFS truck in every Bega Valley town and village.

For many people, anxiety levels also rise at this time of year, stirring up memories and raising familiar questions. Are we ready? Who can we rely on for the right information?

That is why a second message is equally important to hear - one of reassurance. State and local agencies are committed to getting ready.

Fire chiefs, police, and recovery leads recently briefed Council in Bega. Council hosts the Local Emergency Operations Centre and plays a vital role in emergency preparedness and response.

Their message to us was clear: preparations over winter have gone well. Emergency management agencies have been coordinating resources and testing plans to be ready for the coming season.

RFS Acting Director Far South Coast, Chris Anderson, told us around 8,500 hectares of hazard reduction burns were completed this year, with a focus on the “interfaces” between bush and towns and villages. They’ve checked key communications towers. NSW Police Regional Emergency Management Officer, Jenna Conran, outlined operations plans, while Kate Fitzgerald from the NSW Reconstruction Authority spoke about their commitment to supporting communities through recovery after disasters.

Our part is to make sure our properties are prepared and that we understand the risks we face. It is not simply a question of whether to stay or go. What will we take with us? Where will we go? Do fire fighters have adequate access to water?

I live four kilometres up a dirt road bordered by forest. I have cleared paddocks and garden, and laid out the fire hoses. Our plan is to leave if an evacuation warning is issued because I don’t want the RFS members worrying about us when they’re needed elsewhere – and it may be too late to leave safely. Neighbours and friends will make different choices depending on where they are and their resources.

🏍️ October is Motorcycle Awareness Month

Motorcycle and scooter riders are among the most vulnerable road users.

Helping keep our roads safe is a shared responsibility, and whether you’re behind the handlebars or behind the wheel, we all play a part in looking out for one another.

🚗 Drivers: Stay alert for motorcycles, check your blind spots before changing lanes, and allow riders plenty of space to move and react safely.
🏍️ Riders: Wear appropriate protective gear, ensure your motorcycle is roadworthy, and always ride to suit the road, traffic and weather conditions.

Motorcycle Awareness Month is an initiative of the Motorcycle Council of NSW, supported by Transport for NSW.

For more information on motorcycle and scooter safety, visit: transport.nsw.gov.au/roadsafety/motorcyclists
