As weird as it might sound, having depression taught me a lot about having boundaries, and how hard it is sometimes to hold them in place against all sorts of pressures. This applies to work, family, friends and everything else. Not easy but necessary.
After all, they depend on us! Who will help them if we don’t do it? 😮💨
Telling someone “no” may seem simple …but it’s not so straightforward for most compassionate people.
Especially when we care about them.
Especially when it’s natural for us to set aside our own needs in order to help others.
Especially when they have very real needs.
Oh, my compassionate friend. ❤️🩹
Your heart is so generous and loving (and this is a beautiful thing).
Only, when we don’t yet know our boundaries, saying yes to everyone’s wants and needs starts becoming more and more miserable. 😵💫
Because we compassionate folks will give and care and help (and stay) faaaaar longer than we have the capacity to do so — and without taking care of our own needs in the process.
So, who gets hurt?
We do.
To the point of exhaustion, emotional misery, trauma, burn out, or even physical collapse. 😞
Anyone know what I’m talking about?
Being a compassionate person is a wonderful thing.
But we NEED to have the boundaries that come with it.
Otherwise our compassion for others ends up getting twisted into self-abandonment.
And that doesn’t do anybody any favors.
