Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade

Getting fire ready is not just about your home - but also the places you might be going!
You might have seen these Australian Fire Danger Rating Signs (AFDRS) over the past few weeks start lighting up and the arrow moving every day - these signs are important to look at and see the fire risk in areas you are travelling to.

As we head into Summer and the Fire Danger Period, it is important to check the AFDRS daily through the CFA website, so you can plan and prepare for you and your family.

It is with great sadness that Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade (KFFB) wishes to inform the community of the passing of our Life Member, Thomas (Tom) Guilmartin.

Tom was an important, integral and valued member of Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade, and the wider CFA (Country Fire Authority) family, having dedicated more than an amazing 79.5 years of service to the brigade and the community.

Tom joined the CFA on 4 March 1947 and went on to serve as Foreman of KFFB from 1953 to 1957.
Tom remained dedicated to the brigade, still attending KFFB Monthly meetings up until very recently.
In recognition of his longstanding commitment and contribution, Tom was awarded Life Membership of Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade in 1990.

Throughout his service, Tom was awarded the Australian Medal, Queen’s Medal, CFA Life Membership/Service Medals and the VFBV Gold Star, reflecting his dedication and commitment to the fire services.

Tom’s contribution to Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade forms part of our brigade’s proud history. As a Life Member, he will be remembered with great respect and appreciation by our members, and his legacy will continue through the brigade and the community he served.

Please join with me in offering our sincere condolences to Tom’s family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts are with them as they remember and celebrate Tom’s life.

A formal celebration of Tom's life will be held at the William Farmer Reflection Chapel, 12 Victoria Street, Eaglehawk, on TUESDAY (October 20th) at 10:30 am.
Following refreshments, a committal and Firefighters Service will be held at the Kangaroo Flat Lawn Cemetery.

Vale Thomas (Tom) Guilmartin.

Sincerely and warmly,
Captain James O’Brien
On behalf of Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade.

🔥 2027 Calendars are on their way! 📅

Calendar deliveries will take place throughout October. Along with images from 2026, our 2027 calendar design also features recognition to two members of our brigade who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, losing their lives in the line of duty, whilst serving our community: Ex-Captain Walter Anderson & Firefighter Edward Stearns.

The recognition is timely, as it comes as a result of Walter’s sacrifice formally being acknowledged on the National Firefighters Memorial in Canberra, in 2026, after approximately 6 decades of injustice.

Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade remembers both Walter and Edward and pay homage to their service - and felt it fitting that we place our tribute on the 2027 calendar.

The calendars are our gift to the community, but donations are always greatly appreciated. Every contribution helps our brigade continue to train, equip and support our members so we can be there when our community needs us.

Thank you for continuing to support Kangaroo Flat Fire Brigade. 🚒

The VicEmergency app provides a centralised location for Victorians to access timely emergency information and warnings.

The app includes warnings and incident notifications for fire, flood, storm, earthquake, tsunami, weather warnings, shark sightings, beach closures and more.

It uses that information to provide incident summaries and warnings to help you make informed decisions about your safety.

You can download the app from the App Store https://apps.apple.com/au/app/vicemergency/id356559665, or Google Play https://play.google.com/store/apps/details...

In order to receive location specific app alerts when warnings are issued or incidents occur, you must create a watch zone to stay informed this summer.

Get Fire Ready is here!

As Victoria heads into what is expected to be a heightened fire season, it’s more important than ever for residents and property owners to understand their local fire risk and take steps to prepare.

Have you done any of the steps below?
1. Make a fire plan
2. Prepared your property
3. Downloaded the VicEmergency app

You don't have to live in the bush to be impacted by fire - those who work, travel or holiday in areas with grass and bushland need to be prepared for this summer also.

Look up events in your local area so you can Get Fire Ready https://www.cfa.vic.gov.au/abou.../cfa-events/get-fire-ready
