Celebrating Nicole! 🎉👏
A huge congratulations to one of our clients, Nicole who has recently published her book titled 'Dirt Under My Nails' after two years of hard work, dedication and commitment.

In her own words Nicole has shared her writing inspiration “My debut poetry book was inspired by the rollercoaster journey of life adaption through my array of situations, when I first became homeless a few years back I rediscovered writing and poetry through journalling when I wasn't coping with all the sudden changes, covid had hit at the same time. Now fast forward a few years, facing medical setbacks and uncertainties especially, trying to remain positive with mental health has been a struggle at times, especially while having medical flares. Redirecting again after my last employment with minimal support around when I was too unwell to return back to work, I decided to publish my poetry, more so to show others they can keep moving forward too...”

We absolutely love seeing our local community come together to support one another, and we're so grateful to Rotary and everyone who got involved. It's generosity like this that helps us continue making a real difference in the lives of people in our community.

Victoria continues to fall further behind in its ambitions to reduce the number of households waiting for safe, secure and affordable housing. The latest data paints a nauseating picture with 40,857 households now on the Victorian Housing Register (VHR) social housing priority waitlist, up almost 7% on this time last year.

Our joint research with Cushman & Wakefield, ‘Rebalancing Australia’s Housing Mismatch’, explores how housing delivery can better reflect changing household needs.
For investors, developers and industry partners, this offers an opportunity to align investment with unmet demand: homes of the right size, in the right locations, at prices people can afford.

While we must build more social and affordable housing to support people waiting on the VHR – it’s equally critical to be building more affordable and suitable options across the wider housing market to help prevent more households from reaching crisis.

Combining Haven Home Safe’s frontline experience with national data brings a practical perspective to the forces shaping our housing system and the opportunities to respond.

In this video, our CEO Trudi and Cushman & Wakefield Associate Director Josh unpack the research and what it could mean for future housing investment and delivery.

A massive thank you to everyone who stepped up, braved the cold, and joined us at Lake Weeroona for our Winter Walk for Homelessness in August! 💙

Thanks to your incredible generosity and support our client care team have been able to put that support into action by providing 30 food packages to people doing it tough, helping ensure that clients who may be going without a regular meal, often for days at a time, have access to nourishing food when they need it most.

We were also able to create an activity area including an easel, table chairs and art supplies for our Bendigo waiting area, providing a welcoming and creative space where children from can draw, create and play. This distraction means that parents and carers can find some privacy to chat with a client care worker and not have to worry about their kids hearing conversation they would rather they didn’t.

Thank you again to our amazing community partners who stood alongside us and helped amplify front-line voices: MADCOW, Annie North Inc., Centre for Non-Violence, and the Bendigo Winter Night Shelter.

Homelessness is solvable when a community comes together with compassion, action and hope. Thank you for moving with us towards a future where everyone has a safe place to call home. 🫶

A huge thank you to Backpack Bed for Homeless, Australia and GoodNight Melbourne for their valued partnership and support, including the recent donation of 20 Backpack Beds and 24 fire-retardant sleeping bags to our Haven Home Safe Epping team. 🙌

These essential items will help our team provide practical support to people experiencing homelessness who may otherwise have nowhere safe to sleep, offering warmth, protection from the elements and a little more dignity during challenging circumstances.

We know a Backpack Bed or a sleeping bag is not a solution to homelessness, nor is it a substitute for safe, secure and permanent housing. They provide important immediate support while our Epping team continues to work alongside people towards longer-term housing and support.

We’re incredibly grateful for this partnership and the difference this support will make in the lives of people experiencing homelessness.

Together, we can provide practical help when it’s needed most, while continuing to work towards a future where everyone has a safe and secure place to call home.

Tomorrow, Tuesday 11th August is Census night. The Census provides a snapshot of Australia’s people and housing and is the only national estimate of homelessness.

There are lots of ways to fill out the Census – online, on paper or with help from the Census team. Every answer matters.

We're over halfway through Homelessness Week - a time to raise awareness of Australia's housing crisis and, more importantly, advocate for the long-term solutions our communities need.

Every day, our frontline staff, delivering Homelessness and housing supports see the gap between demand and the resources available to respond. More people are seeking help, with increasingly complex needs, while services are being asked to do more with funding models that were designed for a very different housing landscape.

This pressure is felt acutely across regional Victoria, where housing shortages, rising rents and fewer support options mean people often have nowhere else to turn. Services are stretching every dollar, but goodwill cannot fix a structural funding gap.

The impact isn't only on those seeking support. It is also on the people providing it.
New AHURI research found that 90% of frontline housing and homelessness workers experience moderate-to-high vicarious trauma, 61% report symptoms of burnout, and 43% report PTSD symptoms warranting further assessment. These are the people holding our housing safety net together.

The reality is our funding system is built on assumptions of the past. Today's challenges demand a different approach, one that gives services the flexibility to respond to people where they are, invest in prevention, and focus on meaningful outcomes rather than simply meeting outdated targets.

If we're serious about ending homelessness, we need more than awareness. We need funding that reflects today's demand, a significant increase in social and affordable housing, and a system that backs both the people seeking help and the workforce delivering it. This Homelessness Week (and beyond), let's commit to building a system that funds outcomes, values the frontline workforce, and ensures everyone has access to a place to call home.

Thank you to the Bendigo Times for helping us bring attention to this Sunday’s Winter Walk in Bendigo which we’re using to recognise the beginning of homelessness week (article in the comments).

“For most of us, winter means putting on another jumper or turning on the heater. For people experiencing homelessness, it means facing another freezing night without the safety and security of a home” shared out Head of Client Care Riva Alice.

We’re hosting this fundraising event to support Haven Home Safe’s work and to raise awareness of homelessness in Bendigo. This event also aims to help people access information about services provided by Haven Home Safe and our event Community Partners MADCOW Australia, Centre for Non Violence, Bendigo Winter Night Shelter Inc. and Annie North Inc.

Registration is $25 and there is still time to sign up and join us.

On Monday 27th July at 2pm The Australian Government will conduct a national test of AusAlert, Australia’s new emergency warning system.

The test Critical Alert cannot be turned off through a device’s notification settings. A phone on silent or ‘do not disturb’ may still make the alert sound.

AusAlert messages may make a concealed or hidden phone easier to locate. This may present a safety risk for people who use a hidden device, including victim survivors of family and domestic violence.

Anyone concerned about receiving the alert on a hidden device should:
• turn the device off or place it on aeroplane mode at least one hour before the test
• keep it switched off or on aeroplane mode for 24 hours after the test.
