Welcome to the Official page for Berrigan Shire Council
The Berrigan Shire Council is a small rural community with a population exceeding 8,500. It is situated on the NSW/Victorian border and encompasses the four towns of Berrigan, Barooga, Tocumwal and Finley. Bordered by the Murray River, and lush eucalyptus bushlands in the south, it boasts some of the most magnificent sandy river inland beaches that Australia has to offer. The north of the Shire is predominantly agricultural with dry and irrigated farming ranging from grain, beef, sheep, orchards and vegetable crops, dairy and vineyards.

120 Years of Berrigan Shire | From the Archives ๐Ÿ“ธ

From the original Council Chambers to the offices we know today!

As we continue looking back through 120 years of Berrigan Shire history, we've come across some interesting photographs and stories about the evolution of our Council offices.

Our original Council Chambers date back to 1907, but as the Shire grew, so did the need for more space.

On 6 November 1959, new Council Chambers were officially opened in Berrigan, at a cost of approximately ยฃ32,000. The building was considered modern for its time, complete with a clock tower, twin flagpoles and spacious offices.

Fast forward to the 1990s, and Council was once again looking to expand. Plans to relocate the offices to Tocumwal sparked strong community opposition, including a public rally in Berrigan!

Eventually, a land swap helped keep the Council offices in Berrigan, with new facilities established in 1999.

It's a fascinating reminder that while buildings and services have changed over the years, community passion for our Shire has always been strong!

Do you remember the old Council Chambers or the discussions about relocating the offices? We'd love to hear your memories.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Have your say on the Draft Barooga Recreation Reserve - Plan of Management

Council has prepared a Draft Plan of Management for Barooga Recreation Reserve and weโ€™re inviting the community to take a look and provide feedback.

The plan sets out how the reserve can be used and managed into the future, including how Council manages activities, facilities, leases and licences on the land.

If you use the reserve, live nearby or simply have an interest in its future, we encourage you to have your say.

๐Ÿ“… Feedback closes 5pm Monday, 2 November 2026.
