When we heard about 5-year-old Rayaan, and the incredible effort he made on Wear Orange Wednesday, we knew we had to invite him to our unit for a special visit!🧡
Rayaan and his mum spent hours designing and making his very own SES Uniform and a thank you poster. On Wear Orange Wednesday Rayaan made a special presentation at his school assembly acknowledging the work of SES Volunteers.
Today, as we celebrate , this visit was a wonderful reminder to our of the impact our work has beyond responding to emergencies. Seeing our work inspiring young people like Rayaan is incredibly rewarding and highlights the important connection between emergency services and the communities in which we serve.
Our Volunteers loved showing Rayaan around our unit, and share some behind the scenes insights into what being a SES Volunteer is like. We hope it was a day he'll remember, and we can't wait to see Rayaan in orange again soon! 🟧◻️🟧

The NSW SES is the Combat Agency for Storms, Floods and Tsunamis in NSW Garry Hulme was appointed as acting controller till 1973.
NSW SES Canterbury Unit was re-established in 1970 by Garry Hulme and 4 other members, who setup camp in a one bedroom condemned house situated at 161 Beamish Street Campsie. During that time members lobbied for a vehicle through Canterbury City Council who supplied us with a second hand Holden Ute. Last weekend Canterbury SES teamed up with NSW RFS - Illawong Brigade and Menai Bushfire Brigade. NSW Rural Fire Service. to run some combined training at the Canterbury Unit.
The training revolved around assisting at a traffic collision, and tested our first aid, scene command and inter-agency communication.
Although not the primary agency for road crash rescues, Canterbury SES do come across incidents when out in the community, so being able to manage the situation in the initial phases until other emergency services arrive is an important skill. Training like this is valuable in giving our Volunteers the exposure to these differing situations, and the confidence to manage them if required to do so.

After a fairly quiet April, Canterbury was back at it again in May attending to a number of incidents in our local area. We also ran some larger training exercises to test our Search and Rescue skills, and develop our interagency work with other emergency service partners.

As we head into winter our Volunteers will be busy testing and maintaining our response equipment, and training to ensure we are ready to assist the community when they need us. ‼️ ATTENTION ‼️
Tomorrow, Saturday 23rd May 2026, Canterbury SES volunteers will be conducting a Search and Rescue Exercise in the vicinity of the Wolli Creek and Cooks River.
During this time you may see large numbers of SES personnel and vehicles searching along the river, and boats on the river and creek. You may also find some rescue mannequins hidden for our volunteers to find. They will be clearly marked and identified as part of the exercise - please leave them alone if you come across one. An image of what these mannequins might look like will be posted in the comments.
The extent of the exercise will be along the Cooks River and Wolli Creek from Fatima Island to Turrella Reserve near Nanny Goat Hill. Set-up for the exercise will commence from 06:00, and the exercise itself will run from 08:00-12:00.

This Wednesday the 20th May is WOW Day - Wear Orange Wednesday - a day to acknowledge the contribution tens of thousands of SES Volunteers make to their communities across Australia.
At Canterbury SES, our come from all walks of life -students, tradies, office workers, parents, retirees and more - all giving up their time to help keep the community safe.
Participating in WOW Day is easy - all you have to do is wear something orange on Wednesday the 20th May. From a hat, scarf or snazzy beanie, to a full orange 3 piece suit - we want to see you! Upload a photo of yourself in orange and use the hashtag or tag NSW SES

Today, we’re celebrating all the incredible mums, step mums, grandmothers, carers, and mother figures who keep families, communities, and even SES units running strong. 🧡
From answering calls for help, supporting volunteers after long callouts, and still remembering where everyone left their boots, mums are the real heroes of the SES.
To all the amazing mothers in our Canterbury SES family and across the community, thank you for your strength, patience, support, and care every single day.
We hope today is filled with love and laughter.

It's the end of the month so it must be time for another Unit Wrap-Up. April 2026 was an unusually quiet month for our unit, but we were kept busy supporting other agencies and training.
In April our attended 3 incidents across our local area consisting of:

We also assisted NSW Police with volunteers for a number of land searches across metropolitan Sydney.
