🌟 We are celebrating the next generation of clinician-researchers!

πŸ‘Congratulations to Winston and Rupert, Griffith Health medical students, who have been awarded competitive Griffith University summer research scholarships.

Working alongside Professor Greaves, Sunshine Coast Health Co-Director of Cardiology Department and Griffith Health conjoint clinical researcher, students will be contributing to projects focused on cardiovascular disease prevention, early identification of at-risk patients, and clinician knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding cardiac telemetry monitoring, with a focus on improving appropriate monitoring, reducing alarm fatigue and informing patient safety and quality improvement initiatives at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

We're thrilled to support opportunities that build research capability, foster collaboration, and empower emerging researchers to make a real-world impact in healthcare. πŸš€

πŸ’™ Health Literacy Month

πŸ’‘ Did you know 60% of Australians have low individual health literacy?

University of the Sunshine Coast PhD student Ellen is researching how health systems, services, government and public health networks can better support health literacy, help people access, understand and use health information with confidence.

Her work with UniSC and SCHI aims to turn Australia's health literacy framework into practical action that works for everyone. Well done Ellen! πŸ™Œ

Why do some patients respond to treatment while others experience cancer recurrence? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

That's the question driving the research of Dr Lisa Randall, Sunshine Coast Health and University of the Sunshine Coast Postdoctoral Research Associate in Pharmacology.

πŸ”¬ Working alongside Professor James O'Beirne and Dr Lochlan Fennell, Dr Randall is using innovative techniques available at SCHI to investigate liver tissue at a cellular level, helping uncover why treatment outcomes can differ from patient to patient.

With more than 18 years of clinical nursing experience, Dr Randall brings a unique perspective to translational research, bridging the gap between the laboratory and the bedside. Her work aims to improve early identification of at-risk patients, optimise research methods, and ultimately develop more personalised treatment approaches for liver cancer.

🫢 We're proud to support researchers like Dr Randall who are advancing discoveries today to improve patient outcomes tomorrow. To read more about Dr Randall's story, head to the link in the comments.

πŸŽ‰ Happy International Celebration of Research Management Professionals! This day is celebrated globally each September to recognise the vital work of research management professionals.

Research cannot progress without the staff who help secure funding, mange grants, handle compliance, and keep complex, multi-team projects on time. They are key enablers of innovation, providing the expertise and support that help research thrive, deliver successful outcomes, and ultimately improve patient care.

We want to say thank-you for your commitment, collaboration, and unwavering support of research excellence at SCHI! πŸ‘

1, 2, 3…every 3 seconds someone in the world develops dementia.

With more than 440,000 Australians living with dementia in 2026, and numbers expected to double by 2054, access to reliable health information is more important than ever.

At the latest Healthy Ageing Forum held at SCHI, experts from University of the Sunshine Coast, Dementia Australia, Suncare Community Services, Country to Coast QLD and Carer Project shared practical strategies to support brain health and reduce dementia risk by up to 45%.

🚴 Some takeaways? Exercise, nutrition, sleep, social connection, mental stimulation, protecting our senses and multidisciplinary care all play an important role in healthy ageing.

🫢 Thank you, to Country to Coast QLD, Comlink Australia, Sunshine Coast Council, EveryAGE Counts, Healthy Ageing Partnerships, University of the Sunshine Coast for making these community forums possible.

πŸ‘€ Keep an eye out for our next forum in November where we will explore challenges such as loneliness, changes to routines, and uncertain during summer weather events.

πŸ”¬ We are passionate about supporting our researchers as they work on discoveries that improve medicine and patient outcomes for all Australians. Our research focuses on areas such as cancer, gut health, heart, liver and kidney disease, and maternity care.

Professor Kim Greaves, Sunshine Coast Health Co-Director of Cardiology Department and Griffith Health conjoint researcher explained, "Every nine minutes, someone has a heart attack. As heart researchers, we are working to find better ways to prevent and treat heart disease, helping people live longer, healthier lives. With your support, we can make that happen.”

We are committed to projects and studies that translate research into new medicines, treatments, and improved healthcare outcomes. We also support programs and courses that foster careers in healthcare and research, helping to develop the skills and techniques that lead to breakthrough discoveries.

🀝 If you would like to support SCHI, we are fortunate to work alongside our friends at the Wishlist, whose support helps us advance our goal of improving patient care.

πŸ’™ Every donation makes a difference.
